Firstly (& importantly) this is not a SRAM V's SHIMANO debate, so please stop before you start. I'm looking for ADVICE please, (I put that in 'cause it will p1ss some people off - Byrner, Gerry Mac, - if we start debating the merits of both)
I totalled the jockey wheels on my X9 derailluer last night, Joe made the intesting point that changing the derailleur is a better plan as it's just a little more than paying for jockey wheels but you have spares - great. The x.9 jockeys are €22 - €32 & a new derailleur is €54. So Joe's right, no doubt about it. . . BUT. . . an SLX derailleur is €38 for the lot, (I know I'd have to change the shifter to make it compatible) An XT derailleur is also €54. . .
the XT Shadow..end of story..
I don't love bike parts..they only have a job to do and thats the reason for their existence..
I've never broken one but I recently wore one out..
But several experienced team mechanics have all told me more than once that its the quality of the shifter that counts..
don't buy less than XT !!
X9 is equivelant to XT. X7 is SLX. X0 = XTR.
I have SRAM on one bike, XT on the other. both work fine. XT shifters & mech will cost a lot more than a new X9 mech. also, factor in the cost of new cables, & labour....
I'd say stick with the X9......
Someone out there might have a dead X9 mech, no harm in asking...
I have an X7 on the big bike, no probs at all with it, it looks black, tough and mean, which is very important

"Weights 240 grams as light as 2009 X9. Has standard centre bolt jockey wheels, so looks like you could use cheap Shimano replacements instead of SRAM's silly priced ones"
a good selling point if it's true....
I'd suggest you get some cable oilers too - very handy keeps the cables nice and slick

I've goosed about 3 (lower) jockey wheels on my Sram x9 mech, but you can just replace the bearing, costs about 6 euro I think, pop out the old one and puch in the new one by hand, very starighforward, no need for new mechs or jockey wheels.
yeah that makes sense , everyday somebody is looking for parts for sram mechs ...doh !!
Only losers who stay in bed on wet mornings use Sram..I bet if you google Wikepedia - Sram - there would be a big angry photo of Mcinhernia with the wavy arms and the squinty squints frothing at the mouth shouting

I'm with Gerry, one of my XT jocky wheels is slightly worn, after only a year, utter garbage mech, I'm off to but that XX jobbie and one of those milled blocks that take 6 months to produce.
watch it now..he'll be on in a minute shouting at us..he'll declare me senile and incapable of riding a bike and as for you Don, seeing as you didn't exist until he invented you, well he won't even acknowledge you..
If he invented me then I'm still under his warranty, I'll be fine. I bumped into him yesterday and picked his brains about baselayers, he was very cordial, almost no frothing at the mouth.
