Multimedia system nonsense

Hello..
I have a fancy TV and a fancy DVD jobbie..I want to attach speakers to them..I haven't a clue what i'm looking at..I know some of you fine people understand this stuff..
can I get one without a DVD or BLUEray player attached
and why are some €1000 and others €150 from the same manufacturer ?
I don't want to buy a system with another DVD attached..I already have 2 more than I bleedin need !

Hi Richie, I kinda look at this stuff all the time, so next time I see you I can give you the full picture of the land of great (wall shakingly good) home hi-fi!

You can buy a 7.1 or 5.1 speaker set on its own without a DVD player.. you will need a compatible Amp though.. as in a home cinema amp that is either 5.1 or 7.1 surround... then its just a case of plugging it all in..

Power City has speaker sets for less than €150 as far as I can remember...

Actually Richie - I just remembered I have a spare set of haybrook speakers (bookshelf) that you can have - that will get you started. 'HB1' they're called.

They're an older model of these, add a few more & as Gerry says a nice amp & you'll be flying! I'll get cha up to speed!

The speakers are tiny and still give out savage sound, plus it comes with 3 HDMI inputs so plenty for SKY, PS3, Blu Ray etc.

eh hello..I don't need it to wash and blow dry my hair, put out the bins and keep the dogs out of the bathroom..
I'm going with Gerry and Johns recommendations...and when the Government collapses and I'm in charge, you pair will have your Bank Accounts seriously looked at..

Just make sure that the amp can allow for varing distances between speakers or the surround sound effect will be crap.

Is your TV in a corner or does it sit above the fire place, very decklandish?


The sub-wofer will be key for big bang-crash-wallops. Ideally, you should choose your own speaker cable as this will make a huge difference.

What the blazes?! Clive, too much time reading Hi-Fi weekly and not enough time hurling yourself off mountains! I have our TV wired into a rather basic Sony stereo, the 2 speakers sit behind the TV corner unit and the sound is awesome, the kids get scared when it is on. The cables linking everything are made of some kind of wire.

Bi-wiring??? I've heard a lot of bad things about the QED X TUBE 300, seems the QED X TUBE 310 overcome the carnivorous amplitude issues of the 300's.
