Chain Suck

Chain broke on the spin tonight. It was getting sucked in round the middle ring in muddy conditions. Anyway, just wondering is this caused by a worn ring or the chain or is it setup. Also how long are middle rings typically lasting with regular use, crankset is only 8 months old.

How long does the middle ring last... well that depends how much you ride etc. I would say it should last a season...

Alan, conditions were extreme tonight. 8 months of chain use is good going, it broke on a particularly difficult stretch of trail. i was behind you..you were floundering a bit and were in the wrong gear, you shifted and it gave up.
Have a look at it. If it feels loose and noisy, it might even sound crunchy. bin it..et new chain , middle ring and Block..
8 months including this **** winter is doing well. Mind you bear in mind how much i use my bike. And i'm not anal about cleaning it, I get about a year out of chain , middle ring and Block.

You get a year........ffs I have gone through about 4 and 2 rear cassettes and I just replaced the front big and granny. But then again you only weight about 10 stone yeh fecker. I wouldnt mind but i clean the the bejeasusouta my bike after every ride and lube everything........theres no justice in this mtb world

It depends if you push heavy gears or not. Spinning will make it last much longer. Also, they snap most when changing gear when under load.
buy a chain measuring tool. only a few euro, and takes the guesswork out of it.

excuse me..i weigh 80ks !! and you newbies stamp the pedals and use your granny rings when i'm not looking !!

you had to replace your granny ring !!!!! thats obscene!!

Thanks for the info. I may spend a few quid and get it sorted properly, with the last few dry spins I thought it was just a sticky link but I learn everything the hard way.
Funny side of it was I had no spares so walking back to the petrol station and got a taxi back to Lambe Doyles. Taxi driver put a news paper under me to keep his seats dry.

get one of these as it so cheap and when your chain has had enough change it
simple.
one side is for .75% wear,which is fine but worn and on the way out.
but when it gets to .1% wear,change it,and should increase the life of the other bits.

I know the shame of replacing the granny, but I like it on steep climbs to just keep the legs spinning unlike you I cant run and I feckin hate pushing the bike.

Thats ****ed up !!! no seriously..if you couldn't fix a broken chain without powerlink you need help..
i've seen lads make their way home from savage spins with one pedal, broken chainset, broken knees,broken arms, taped together frames, broken forks without resorting to a frickin Taxi !!
that is not the EPIC way..
