Was looking at a new wheel build and got bewildered on the hubs.
Hope II's seem good (if insanely priced) but are slated for the alu freehub, which when combined with a steel block can cause problems. At over â¬100 a hub they would want to be bombproof.
I know Deore are crap but if you move up and get XT's are they any better, plenty of stories of them lasting no time at all.
What is good hub that requires little or no maintenance?
The hopes are great. I dunno what all the panic about freehubs is. The freehub body end up with some marks on it, under the cassette, where you can't see it, if you use a steel cassette. So what?
Hopes, definitley. Andy has my old Hopes still going strong after four years, only every had bearings replaced once in rear hub. Shimano XT are pure sh1te!!!!
another vote for pro II's
and the same front hub does quick release, 15 and 20mm bolt through (just need the spacers)! I've a set and they move between bikes..
pro II's and 819's, around 350yoyos, and OC James builds them up, its a no brainer
IMO... In terms of quality and reliability... from best to worst...

If your looking for 100% reliability & if you can afford them go for the I9's or Chris King's..
The Nukeproof Generators get great reviews all the time and are on a par if not better (IMO) than the Hope's...
Without a doubt Hope's are great too... like Chris King's they are commonly used by trials riders, as the freehub mechanism is very reliable and can take a lot of abuse.. Also, being common as muck, getting spares is a painless... fixing, servicing and replacing bearings is easy too..
Don't worry about the aluminium freehub.. all my I9's have aluminium freehubs.. yes, the cassette digs in a little and leaves a mark but that's all.. its not an issue..
When it comes to hubs I'd much rather have reliability over any other feature..
ah yeah, theres no question that the value for money and reliability of Hope pro IIs with 819 rims and a set of ignitors are the only game in town..
anything else is just stupidity or being stylish ( in the case Mac The Knife,only)
James O Carroll will throw a set of Hopes and 819s together for a great price..
But Don..I can get you a shovel for free..and a shovel or a mattock or a set of loppers will make a far better mtber out of you ! because as you have probably worked it out by now, i have put a Pikey curse on you and every tyre choice and every spin is going to be a let down from now on..you and Sideburns mcgonagle will be found huddled together on the side of the N11, feet from a texaco garage, having done unmentionable things to each other just to stay alive and you won't even know how you got there !!

Lookit, if I am lucky I get to ride the bike 180 minutes a week, do you really think I am going to fritter that time away putting my back out with a mattock and getting eaten by midges? Anyway, you know with my soft hands I'd be useless at it. And my heart now makes a kind of slushing noise when it beats instead of firm, pumping noise, if I don't get my 3 hours a week I am going to pop my clogs before I am 45.
But you are totally wrong on the rim/hub/tyre thing, the front tyre needs to be a Bulldog, the Ignitor shoulder is too round for our off camber trails.
you go too far with your denounciation of the mighty Ignitor with your lily livered choice of Bulldog up the front with its shapedy shape that I can't remember !!
