This is such a black art to me as I never seem to have the same problem twice. Put on new cables and outers for the rear mech, now it's jumping from 1st to 3rd, reluctant to first, but perfect up and down between 7,8,9.
I'm not so fussed as between the leaking fork and the clinking DU bush the rogue gears are but a trifle, but any tips?
you need to boil your cables in Olive oil, leave them overnight and then they will be perfecto next day..or have a Samoan Virgin wee on your bike for Luck.

Set it up so it shifts down the block smoothly (big to small). don't worry about shifting up. When shifting up you can "help it" as such, but not going down.

Mine always tend to skip after ive been out for a while.
I find the best way of tunning them is;
Loosen the rear mech cable at the mech itself.
Spin the wheels it should drop to the smallest cog.
Drop your gears to the lowest one.
Twist the adjuster out a few turns.
Pull the cable tight and re-tighten it.
Set the limit so the mech is inline withe the chain on the bottom cog.
Go up the gears one by one.
If its a bit hesitant going into one of the gears twist the barrell adjuster out at the mech.
When you get to the highest gear set the limit again.
Im sure you prob know how to do it anyway but i find that way the best to stop the skipping there is def nothing worse as you know.
Yeh set the limits first then route the cable, should work no prob. As the cable initially stretches or as the outter caps bed in, take up the slack with the shifter cable tensioner.
If it was working perfectly beforehand its unlikely the hanger is bent....but....you may have bent it whilst removing the old cable whilst wearing your oven gloves.
