What front mech do I have?

Front mech is falling apart.

Am I conventional or top swing and what the blazes?

It is a top pull, the wire yoke runs down to the mech thing.

Look at where it attaches to the frame, is it above the mech? if so.. top swing. if not, bottom swing.
Does the cable come from above? if so, top pull. If not, bottom pull.
Most new mechs are both top or bottom pull.
If it's like this, it looks like bottom swing, top pull....

When replacing the front mech, main 3 things you need to know

1. type of mech
2. direction of cable pull
3. band clamp size (there are 3 sizes of band clamp)

There are other things to consider such as how many rings you are running, what size rings etc.. etc.. but don't worry about this for now..

There are four main types of front mech..

1. Bottom Swing - the oldest design and also commonly known as 'Conventional Type'

It is called bottom swing because the derailler cage swings below the band clamp..



2. Top Swing - the derailler cage swings above the band clamp..



3. E-type - bolts to the bottom bracket shell (no need to worry about band clamps sizes etc..)



4. Bolt On / Direct Mount / Braze On - derailler has no band clamp and bolts directly to the frame

Now I just need to find out the steenking clamp diameter.

Don, the clamp diameter is usually marked on the inside of the clamp.

Is there any way to to see the inside of the clamp without taking it off? I took the seat post out and had a look down the seat tube but it was dark in there.

Can I also add you're all being very nice, like you would be to guy with one leg, or a hump. I appreciate it.
