Bikes suitable for beginners

Hi Lads, I'm looking to get into biking but don't have a clue about the sport. I'm in the market for a good bike to get me started. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what type of biking are you planning to do

I am looking to spend somewhere in the region of 800 euro, can't really go higher than a grand. 2nd hand bikes maybe??

As for the type of biking, I'd like to do a bit of everything - Cross Country mainly I suppose.

Bike to Work scheme mate.. you can buy a brand new bike and accessories up to €1000 and get your tax back.. ho much you get back depends on what tax band your on.. Its better than going 2nd hand as you'll have warranties, back up and customer service..
