Bringing your bike on a flight

Hey all,

Long time, no see! Hope everyones good, its being agggeeess!

I'm heading to the alps for a weeks of mtn biking, and was toying with the idea of bringing my own bike, but am kinda worried about it being bashed up by Ryan Air. Its not a financial decision, as the rental is probably only 40€ more then checking it in, but i like the idea of riding a bike i know.

Any thoughts/experience?

Bring your own, pack it well and remove parts like rear mechs, which stick out and more subject to damage. Drop it in a bike bag/box and away you go, happy days.

DH bike rental in the alps is about €100 a day, bring your own. Also the rental bikes are hammered loose headsets, bearings and bushings wobbling all over the place they are poorly maintained.

Cool, thanks guys... Rental is only about 140 for four days and i've allways liked the idea of 'don't be gentle its a rental' but on the basis that i own a bike already, think i'll bring it along!

Take your derailler hanger and your discs off too...

On that note lads, whats the story with buying a "hard" bike case? Yea I know you can rent them at around 50 Euro per week. But for MTB can anyone recommend a bullet proof well priced case? Planning a MTB holdiday but need to get craking on the case;D

I think the hard cases are very heavy too and the airlines have a weight limit on bikes now - Aer Lingus 15kgs?

Aer Lingus have a weight limit of 15kgs but they don't weigh them (well they didn't last week).

Ryanair have a weight Limit of 20kgs and they do weigh them (and charge for excess).

I brought my own bike but in fairness if going again I'd be tempted to rent. All the rental bikes (in Morzine) looked like they were in good condition and packing \ unpacking \ transporting bikes is a royal pain.

Plus, when renting you get to try something different, lots of Morewoods etc available to rent over there. On the off chance you're going to Morzine let me know. I have website addresses of all the Rental shops.
