the wheel is perfect untill I start going down hill ie freewheeling at speed and all of a sudden it sounds like the wheel is rubbing of the chain stay but its not.
Bon told me to remove the wheel and skewer and freehub which I did, and looks like everything is ok.
there seems to be a bit of wear on the little flappy thinks dont know tech term but i presume these lock into the free hub when you pedal.
could this be the problem or is it the bearings which also look fine?
do i apply grease to these flappy thingmabobs or not, I'm not used to putting things like this together without grease but then again these mtb's are very fickle.
Sounds like your freehub is binding.. ie its not freewheeling at the same speed as your wheel.. as a result your chain will go slack and rub against the frame / wheel...

Now I agree with Mac..I had a set of those wheels and the same thing happened..I cleaned and put oil on them and replace the pawls from another rear Crossmax wheel I had that I snapped the Axle on and it lasted another 6 or so months of severe riding but in the end they disetegrated as well..
For this country with its toxic bogs, radioactive rain , corrosive dust..you need Hopes with 819 rims ( i do not know these 919s , you speak of)
This is a mistake that Irish riders make time and time again..think about where you are riding and the GAA environment of Ireland..its harsh on bikes, Clothing and bodies..all the bling bits on your bike from little boutiques in Italy and France and Sunnyville, USA..they won't last pissing time here in The Republic Of Godforsakeonia !!
And while i worship at the alter of Shimano ..there hubs are just a scream !!I'd say theres a factory of little Japanese Women on an Island in the Pacific Ocean making them out of old canteens from WW2 !!

If your cassette hub body has ever skipped a pawl, remove and inspect for small metal shaving, these will help chew up the hub spindle and piss you off.
Here is the fix for all us 2006 and down owners:
1. Buy a set of the 2007 pawls (#32430301)- Harder material (stainless steel, will/should not chip).
2. Buy a new cassette hub body (#M40580) (start fresh)
3. Most important! Buy the new seal (#99500001)! They claim this is the problem, it let's dirt in the hub and this creates a sand paper effect. The big concern is the nylon bushing built on the hub cassette body will grind (w/dirt) away at the hub shaft creating play, thus ruining it!
I think its the seal and soft pawls.
4. Use the Mavic Mineral Oil(I read Pedros Road Rage will work also).
Hey RL fkhead motorbikes dont have the same crap as these bleedin things so shut your trap!!!
I got the wheels cheap so I'm looking for info on how to keep them going, me thinks the grease I put on them might be to thick. Would a bit of fully synthetic oil work untill I get this light grease and these Pawls be replaced.

They do be getting a fair hammering and I run them about between 30 and 40psi and am 12 stone. Based on my short experience with them if you are a fat bastiche and hurl yourself off big stuff I would see is there anything stronger out there.
Don't mind Donk or other part time riders..I've used 819s Downhilling, Xcing, AMountainining..they work deadly for everything..people who dent rims can't land their bikes and are usually fat !
and Smithers use synthetic lube on them flappys..grease will just act as glue !
I have Crossmax sls on my XC bike now because i got a fine set of Joe for a good price , we'll see how they go, since they will be going on to my Reign for the winter !!
Smithers you big eejit - as I said to you on Sunday make sure that, aswell as a very light film of grease on the pawls (or even better on the teeth cut into the inside of the freehub so that you don't risk sticking the pawls down with grease), you put a nice film of grease on the white/yellowish plastic bushing that is located on the inside of the freehub. When this is dry it makes that awful howling noise as its basically a dry bushing spinning very fast on the hub when you are freewheeling, leading to vibration/noise. Your brain was obviously still scrambled on Sunday (as was mine!).
