Is there a trick to this? Bleed the normal way and they feel fine, then halfway though the club race the travel on the lever increases until the bite point is near the bars and near useless.

Have a look at the tutorial video on you tube (the one with the dubbed voice), especially part 2. I had the same problem with mine but followed that procedure (until no bubbles were coming out) and they are perfect now.
I've had this problem with an old Hayes brake and an Avid brake, can be hard to sort out, I ended up replacing hoses first then the master cyclinder, got it going again but a new brake would have been cheaper, but I was half way down the fix-it road before I knew that.
Oh, actually my current rear brake (Juicy ultimate) had a similar problem and I found that a fitting was loose, air was being drawn in.
If its neither of those then I'd say your brake lever is in a state of temporal flux, try an inverse tachion pulse.
