Since the spin on Scar on Saturday my rear disk break is making a loud grinding noise when I break. I've only had the bike 3/4 months so I wouldn't imagine it's worn pads. Any ideas guys?

3-4 months is plenty of time to wear out a set of brake pads! That's the first thing I'd check!
especially when you are a newbie ! they're worn out !
ah right, thanks lads. So, do I need to get new ones fitted in a bike shop, or is it something I could attempt myself?
Shouldn't be any bother to you - what brakes are on the bike?
It has Hayes HFX-9 XC brakes. I can get replacement pads on Ebay for €6. They cost €18 or so on CRC.
There are some guides online for replacing them, ..apparently they are easy to change. I'm guessing thats for someone who has a clue though
I noticed while reading up on them though that the pads may just need to be cleaned if they are squeeling and may not be worn. Anyway, I don't know, so I'll just buy the replacements and see if I can do them myself. I have to start to learn this **** at some stage, might as well be now.

you may have a small piece of grit in them too..
take out the pads if they are down to the metal plate change them, if not it something else.the formulas have a little spring which sometimes gets buckled up and makes a terrible noise.

Have a look at the pads through the calipers, is the friction surface worn down? New they have around 2mm thickness. Are your rotors scored, ie grooves in them on the braking surface?
thanks guys. I'm at home this evening, so I'll break out the toolset and see if I can take them apart and have a look.
when the pads are out do not pull the leavers as that can cause a lot of grief.the pistons can be hard to get back to where they were.

So I took the pads out, not nearly worn down, also no wear on the discs. There was a 1mm deep line going across the length of 1 pad though which is strange. Anyway, I put them back on and went for a cycle and there is no squealing at all. Hopefully there was something caught in it which miraculously fell out when I removed the pads.
