So I went for my first spin with the new light tonight and was a very happy biker who was able to see clearly for a change!! Until.......the light went out completely when I was pinning down the burm track!! :(
Does anyone know what caused this fail?
I had given the battery a full charge last night.
it had not taken a knock.
it did not get wet.
There seems to be a fault with the battery unit. Surely if it was just running out of juice it would dim a bit and give some kind of warning. Also, we were only riding for about an hour and a half.
Any ideas? Anyone had this fault? Anyone had to sent a unit back?
Same thing happened to me, worked once then nothing, tried another battery and still nothing. I used the customer complaint sysem on the site and returned them and they sent me a new set.
This is a very long process, took weeks to get a response even. All in took about 3 months to have new light from first complaint.
Keep your vat receipt ( if you paid) aswell since an post will try and relieve you of it agin on the new package.
buy something else in the meantime as winter will be over when you get a replacement.
If the batteries are brand new NiMh then you may need to put them through a full charge / discharge cycle a few times before the battery can achieve its full capacity. Just charging it once, from new, is not a good indication of battery run time.
NiMh batteries will discharge fully in one go and then cut out, usually fairly quickly without much notice.
NiCd batteries will fade & loosing their charge slowly. Giving you plenty of notice of their impending failure.

Hmm, i agree that the batterries have to be formatted first but i don't get it how could they just stop working IF the lamp has a regulator curcuit installed and working properly.
my lamp has NiMH batteries but the regulator circuit maintains the selected current, eg. 1000mA full power as long as the batteries are able to deliver this. And then the light fades slowly ( 'slow death' ).
So it seems like it would not be a battery issue but the "voltage management" / regulator is faulty.
I'd say NiCd is (was) a pain comparing to NiMH
Yes, but if the battery isn't reaching its full charge capacity then it is probably not delivering the full load (current) that is required to drive the light engine. Also, the regulator circuit may operate on an 'all or nothing' basis, so if the optimum current is not being delivered (by the batteries) then the light simply doesn't work.
Oh and I also agree with you on the whole cheap ass Chinese light malarky... I wouldn't waste my time and money on them when you can buy something a lot more reliable for a little more money from the likes of Al in The Bikerack or Stewart in Sprocket cycles.
At least then if something does go wrong you can return it to the shop directly and not have to go through the whole process of sending the lights back - which inevitably costs money, time and effort.

Is there an issue with getting good quality lights that never fail from your local bike shop , where theres no returns problems ?
the only people having any joy with the Chinese lights are people who spend more time maintaining them than riding with them.
Buy the best lights you can afford and always bring a back up commuter light !!

These were sold out by the time I got over to the bike rack but the I got a bargain stella light off them instead, bright enough for my pace, great lights, quick charge, long burn, looks like a reliable enough light at a good price....cheers lads.
Just as an update, my light works fine now! Thanks for the advice Gerry. I just needed to charge and discharge the battery a few times and I now get 3hrs on full power every time!
