Could any one recommend a good set of cheap wheels I'm a little on the heavy side and my entry shimano hubs aren't up for it have to replace bearings and cones to often for my liking looking for something strong not bothered about weight

depends on what you call cheap. Mavic cross rides at about 175 are pretty good bang for your cash. Cartridge bearing hubs and a half decent rim can't really go too far wrong. Hope do some nice wheels from about 350-400 which id class as good value given you can spend 1000 and more on wheels if you really want to
I have a set of Mavic EX 729 downhill rims, 32 holes with eyelets on Shimano XT hubs. Hand built in The Cycle Inn and they're tough as hell. I used them for cycle touring, so they've just been on the road. Stickers are off the rims, but they're perfectly tight and true. 100quid

Thanks for the offers and info. the crossrides where my first preference new, for the sake of the extra few bob might pick up a second set after xmass secondhand to build up a hardtail cheers.
what the f*ck is going on here ? If Al ( long time bike nerd and MTB expert) says Crossrides are bang on and I agree with him then it should then be good enough for everybody else ..
Who the fu*ck are Superstar..and Shimano make **** hubs..Hope make the best ( unless you are McInerney with his weird but classy wheels )

Something tells me this chap is definitely no expert... from reading some of his 'advice' over on IrishDh, I'd go so far to say he's completely clueless.. I mean why in the name of Jeebus would anyone spend â¬500 on a set of no-name special wheels when you can get the infallible Hope ProII's / 819's from Al or James.. for a hell of a lot less...
