Just looking for some advice on pedals before I kill myself.
What are the prefered type of pedals, flats or SPDs I have been using the latter but have had a couple of falls due to being clipped in at the wrong moment.
So far I have really only been down around Ballinstoe but landed on some rocks yesterday and bashed my knee pretty bad.
the simplest way out of this is Flats and proper shoes till you're confidence grows with your skills.
Spds are generally better for proper XC racing where its just normal, there are exceptions to this but you have to be pretty damn good to ride well in an XC race on flats.
Starting off , I'd recommend flats, but flats with the right shoes, like 5.10s..
Learn your skills, get some instruction from a proper Coach , theres one lad available on this site, Alfie Wallace, ( Alfie is his user name).
hes a Cycling Ireland Qualified Coach and an SMBLA Trail Leader.
He'll teach you how to ride your bike properly and how to set it up to get the maximum benefit from it.
Flats vs SPDs is a personal thing and theres loads of unqualified experts that will ram the wron knowledge down your gob.
Some people take to SPDs straight way but they do require acclimatization ( or so it would seem )
Get used to both I would say.

Thanks I thought I might get an answer like this prob a bit old for coaching and not exactly new just returing to it after many years I think I will stick onsome flats and guage what I should use by how many times I dont fall off next time out.
you're never too old for coaching..believe me..of course being Irelands number 1 MTB Coach I would say that !!!
The sport has moved on ..in fact it changes every year..
believe me..everybody needs Coaching, unfortunately I'm only available to racers due to time constraints.

yes..i've used them and they are deadly..they are the only shoes to use with flats, however I am open to correction on this , but only from Al Maxwell upwards !!

Decided to stick with the spuds like you said the key is to improve your technique got around the whole of Ballinstoe today without coming off the bke once.
