Brake lever bust?

The left (Deore XT) lever took a whack and now she does nothing. The lever just pulls the bars with zero action on the caliper, but no fluid is leaking, any idea what gives?

Could have broken the little pin that pushes the master cylinder ?

Or it may have just popped out, could maybe recombobulate it..

Whatever it is I'm unimpressed, years of bashing and bending other levers and I've never been left without brakes, luckily it was the back brake, so I could continue for a few more mountains, steenking XT!

Sorry Don, I only just spotted this..

Sounds like air got into the system when it got a knock.. even a tiny amount of air will make a big difference... so the first thing I'd try is bleeding them.. only bleed from the lever as this is where the damage occurred.. bubbles float to the top so don't worry about the caliper end of things..

Also, as Colin suggested, make sure the the master cylinder pushrod isn't bent or damaged...

Try bleeding it first anyways, if that doesn't work I have some lovely XTR master cylinder assemblies for you..!!

Hey Don - what's the update on your brake problem? The lever, piston, burst seal? Maybe poor design or manufacturing processes on Shimano's behalf? Dying to hear .......

Well it was an interesting lesson Richard, the bike landed on the lever, the lever twisted on the bar thankfully, clever me didn't over torque the nuts, so I had lever fixation, the problem HAD to be there, right? But as ever in life things are rarely as they seem. Ignore the bigger picture at your peril. Turned out when the bike fell a rock also crimped the brake line near the shock and the fluid was leaking from there. Skillfully resolved by Stew things are hunky dory again, and a new DU bush too, bliss.
