new wheels

I need to get a set of light weight wheels for my mtb race bike
any advice please.
ust preferred

Stans crest rim, hope 3 hubs. Nice and light and strong, just make sure you get the correct rim tape!!!
I got mine from OC tuning €380.
I also really like the Shimano XTR wheels very fast rolling and very strong, down side the freehub is very expensive to replace €100 plus but I got 2 years outa mine so not bad.
All the Lads use Mavic 819 rims and hope 2 hubs I think €380 again from OC tuning, heavier but very strong.

Hopes are the best hubs..James can rebuild them no problem.
I've only used 819s and absolutely no problem.
I've revived Mavic Sls and sts but I think they are brittle but as you rarely ride your bike and prefer to fiddle with your fellujah , they should be ok..

They more around 2kg Micky, not the lightest set around but defo one of the most bulletproof.

you lads will never learn..
it takes about €200 to lose 1kg off your bike and only more exercise to lose the flabby girdle you have on some of you !
so you have set of wheels that weigh 2k big freakin deal only if you're diet includes 12 doobies a day and cornish pasties dipped in peanut butter.
buy the hopes off James and shut up.

A 819 rim is 450 grammes
A front pro 2 is 185 g
A back pro 2 is 310g

Thats 1395g.No way will the spokes weigh 600g!!!2kg is miles off Max!!!

The weight of an 819 is closer to 500g because of the stupid little metal ferrules which are required to build the wheels.. which of course Mavic don't mention in the specs / weight guides on their website...

My advice and in my opinion... If you have the opportunity of getting a custom set of wheels built I'd go for ZTR rims all the way, hands down, they have no competition.. Hope Pro II hubs at the very least.. do not get Shimano hubs even if they are being given away for free..

Stay away from Mavic 819's.. or all Mavic rims (in my opinion)

Avoid Shimano factory built wheels like the plague.. getting spare parts for them is a complete nightmare.. your also tied into proprietary rims / spokes / hubs that you cannot get away from..

But whatever you do make sure you get White rims as we all know it is the best place to add extra, unnecessary, rotational weight to your bike..

I don't have time to trawl the internet reading Scientific stuff about rims and as 819s are the only ones I know of ( I was told by people who learn this stuff for fun that they were the biys to have)
I have had no problems with them and I care not about grams, i prefer my legs to do the talking.
But whats the advantages of the ZTRs over 819s and leave out the grams, I don't think 10grms or even 20 grams are going to make a difference to me.
I need wheels that don't let me down and keep the bike around 22lbs, obvioiusly before you get into a tizzy about other components at the end of the day I believe 22lbs is the optimum weight for an xc bike, this is based on the Richiebyrne foot up the arse chart.

Those are just my opinion and view's... I'm not trying to start an argument here..

Mavic rims are great.. 819's are absolutely fantastic.. do not get me wrong... but since using ZTR's I just cannot recommend Mavic over them..

And as for Shimano.. just don't get me started..!!

Well Micky I have two sets of wheels built up with hope pro II hubs, one set with 819 rims and one set with ztr alpine rims and I can say the ztr wheels are substantially lighter than the 819's!! So if you want to save a few grams without it costing any extra as Terry is buying new wheels anyway I'd go with the ztr's. Sorry Gerry, my rims are white too!!!

They're tubeless with a thin little bit of yellow tape Richie...
