Hey all.
Just starting to shop around for my first full sus. Have spotted a lot of sweet affordable second hand bikes around, problem is most of em are s-m and I'm 6'3". Was just hopin to get a bit of feedback from some tall guys out there whether I'm mad thinkin about something with maybe an 18" frame, or am I just as well off with a long seatpost and stem? I'm mainly into XC trails but wouldn't mind getting a lightish DH or FR bike, something that can take a bit more punishment where maybe a smaller frame mightn't be a bad thing.

no frickin way..you need a 20" frame !! i have a lovely 20" 2nd Hand Felt Virtue with 5" travel Front and rear , Full XT, hardly used, tubeless ready, weighing in at a tidy 24lbs !!

Cheers, but I think I gotta stay on the sunny side of a grand this time round or I'll be divorced. There seems to be a good bit out there on a budget. I just gotta keep lookin for a bit more for a large frame.
I've a small hardtail (maybe 16 inch frame...my wifes bike that she doesn't use really) with a long stem and a long seat post and a large hardtail with shorter stuff on it (maybe 19 inch frame), both suit me fine and I like riding both of them, I do notice the shorter wheel base a bit on the small bike but I also like the feeling of the small frame, feels more like a BMX with gears, but I'm not as tall as yourself...a large may be your only man but a medium could suit you grand, I don't think a small bike will suit.

Both these bike aren't set up much differently with regards to leg and arm reach but saying all that if I had to buy another one I'd just buy a 17 or 18 inch yoke as it would probably fit me better but being in the second hand market a lot myself I wasn't too fussy.
That's a sweet bit of kit alright, but if I spent that on the frame, I wouldn't be able to afford to build the bike, and moving the stock bits from my current bike would be pointless and wouldn't do it justice. Cheers tho.
Ah don't mind that.. think about it like this... buy the frame and fork.. swap your old stuff onto it for a while... in the meantime you save up some cash & slowly start changing out the bits you don't want.. after a few months you have your dream bike built up exactly the way you want it.. and you've saved a packet.. simples..!!

I also have a more or less brand new 2011 Sram X9 drivetrain (9 speed) plus a few other bits n bobs to sweeten the deal if your interested.. it will make up the guts of a full bike..
