Anyone ever bother trying to make a wheel at home themselves, is it worth a try or are you much better off leaving it to the professionals....I think I'll give it a go anyway but just wondering how much hassle it is.

practice with a cheap rim/hub and spokes i'd say... Though when you see "The Greg" building a wheel he makes it look easy! :)

I did my first full wheel about 6 months ago, new hub, old rim and spokes, easy enough. Bring it all into the sitting room, stick on the TV and relax, don't try and rush it, use another wheel for reference.
Doing the dishing, tensioning and truing can be tricky without a wheel building stand but you can use your frame.
There's a slight hop in the one I built but that's just as a result of using an old rim.

I've only done some simple 36 spoke wheel in the past, laced 18/18 and it was easy enough. Never tried asymmetrical lacing or any of the new wheels with fewer spokes (24 etc.), it might be a bit trickier. Worth giving it a try, you can always give to a professional if it goes wrong.
Cheers lads, yeah I'll be using an old rim and spokes with a new hub too....I'll give it a bash sometime during the week.
Been out on it twice, seems like it worked out OK, would I recommend it...not really, would I do it again, probably.
It did take a few hours though, did the drive side, seemed OK, did the other side and the drive side looked like it was laced wrong, it was also flat on one side...looked at it the next night, yes it's ****ed, unlace the drive side and fix it....ok that's fine now...night three put it in the frame and true it, now that's fine, put the v-brakes on it, no, over too far so that's ****ed, re-true it to fit properly...yeah that seems fine now.....I hope I get a few months out of the ******* yoke now.
