Yeah the scheme is great, my road bike was €960 in the shop and after all the tax re-calculation I paid €480 for it! The only problem was that my employer would only accept purchases from one particular shop.
then you need to change your employers mind , as far as I know its illegal for Employers or Bike shops to insist that you can only use one bike shop.
I get people daily coming to me saying they were supposed to buy from acme bikeshop but who want a Felt..so they come to me ..I do the quote and hey presto they come back and away you go.
I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure because its the Government paying the Tax relief you can pretty much go where you like ..
there are companies like our Raleightowork scheme that you have to use Eurocycles and your company signs up to that and its a Voucher system but most of the BTWs I get are Cheques..Be wary of it and remember..the Government is running this, not the Bike Shops.

Now I had two plumbers who are partners in their own Company and they did it. So I am not sure how it works.
I've had several other self employed people do it too..maybe its the â¬150 worth of free accessories we give on the value of the bike if its the maximum â¬1000 !! and they don't claim the BTW back from the Gov..it doesn't matter to me or the shops though.

I just find it horrendous that people would buy a bike online when they can get it cheaper in the LBS with this scheme .

Most people buy a bike and if its over the â¬1000 they just make up the difference.
Just remember that its still going.
I have Focus Black raiders with full XT and Fox Forks for â¬1400 !! think about that and i'm pretty sure other brands have similiar !!

Self employed people cannot avail of it because it is based on thePAYE/ PRSI system.
What they can do is buy a bike as a company asset. that way they save 21% vat on top of making less profit, which can end up saving more than the b2w scheme. They are also not restricted to €1000. Chat with your accountant, and see if you can justify purchasing a bike.

I hear you on this and being self employed myself and can't avail of it.
There are one or two ways around it well ish kinda...
-If you aren't a sole trader and make yourself an paye employee of Mcnipples LTD you could then avail of the scheme. A whole pile of effort just to take part in the cycle to work scheme.
- The other and more straight froward way to get some dosh of your bike would be to buy it as a company asset and then you use it as such. You could then claim the VAT back. Of course you could always write the cost of the bike off against depriceation over a couple of years. I'm not sure if you would be liable for benifit in kind but it couldn't be that much?
But as to why self employed people can't just take part in the scheme in a straigh forward I'll never know.
If your in the market for a new bike and dont try make use of the cycle to work scheme your mental.
