derailleur/shifter compatibility

I snapped my rear mech hanger and mangled my tired old alivio derailleur about two weeks ago. So I found a new hanger on crc and thought I'd upgrade to an XT derailleur while I was at it. The package arrived today and I got straight to fitting it only to realize at the end that the old mech had the barrel adjuster down at the mech and the new XT is designed to use a barrel adjuster that's up at the shifter, which mine doesn't have :mad: For the time being I bent the old one back as best I could and fitted it again as I thought there'd obviously be no point in not being able to adjust the cable tension.
Now I'm sure there must be a simple solution if anyone could point it out because i don't want to have to shell out another €50 for a new shifter/brake lever (yup they're all in one) just for the teeny barrel adjuster. Is there an adjuster I can get that sits independently somewhere along the cable?
Or maybe someone might have an old shifter/brake lever lying about that could do me as a cheaper alternative?

You will need new shifters, alivio is 7 or 8 speed were xt is 9 you could probably get it to run on a 8 speed cassette by adjusting the limit screws,

One possible option could be this

I have a couple of these you can have, they are Dura Ace and can be inserted anywhere along the cable but generally about 2" from the shifter.

Nice one. That looks like just the thing for me. I knew something like this had to be out there. They're only cheap anyway so I'd say I'll track em down online handy enough. Otherwise I might get in touch soon.

I have 8 speed deraileur (acera or alivio) and shifter for a tenner if you want.

I also think I have those cable shifter/brake combos hanging around .
