XTR M970 or M980?

Have about €300 to spend on new brakes for my hardtail, should I stretch my budget and get the new XTRs or save myself €30 and get the old ones? Or what else should I consider.

The new XTR ones are the shizzle but the old XT are great too.

Where can you get M980 for €300?
They are great brakes though. I still think XT are hard to beat.
Formula RX or R1 are good too.

I can't get the get the M980s for that but if they're that deadly I'd stretch the budget. i have a set of RXs on the Trance which are brilliant but i wanted to drop the weight on most of the stuff I'm putting on the bike.

New XTR are sweet, but are just a race brake. I'd expect serious fade on long descents.
I could be wrong, but fluid volume is low etc.

Once upon a time a man who shall remain nameless bought hisself a set of shimano deore brakes from a Mr Al Maxwell in the Bike Rack..
He used them in Wales,Scotland, all over Ireland in 3 years of DH NPS, 3 visits to Morzine , numerous adventures on different bikes all over the kip..
I'm still using them, last used on my reign last Monday coming down Lug...
I may have Bled them once..I can't remember..My point is they are basic 2nd generation shimano deores..
I'd say you would pick them up for €70 a pair..
€300 for a set of brakes does not buy you great brakes..it buys you Jewelllery, cop on to yourselves seriously !!
Unlike most people I have actually used all Disc brakes..and those Deores are still going. so they might weigh a few grams more than your XTs..pedal fooking harder then..

Gotta agree with Richie here. I got the last generation of XTR's a couple of years back. They worked fine, but honestly, apart from the logo's, I couldn't tell the difference between them and much much cheaper brakes. I've Avid Juicy 3's on a bike, and I've just ordered a new set to replace the xtr's - cos they went a bit crap over the last year, despite attempts to bleed them etc. (Only reason I got the avids and not deore was they were cheaper). It's just not worth the money on a bling set of brakes, put it into the wheels if you must I guess, or shifters (deore mech's are as good as anything, so anything else is bling too).

I think XTR stuff is much nicer to use that lower groups and marginally lighter, get it if you have the cash but to buy XTR over XT just to save weight? Come on...

ask Bob Seymour what his favourite brakes are too !! XTRs...only jewellry !!

hey - save yourself a fortune and get some Avid Elixir 5's - I have the 3's n the race bike - they're the basic ones but by feck they are seriously powerful - deadly yokes

Spend the money you save on a nice big dinner in Palmer's for me - sure get yourself a pint & burger while you are at it

I might just do that Fergal, in fact, I just have. My problem this evening was I had the wifes CC at my disposal and a generous budget handed to me, so after careful consideration and a big bottle of "Cop the Fcuk On", I just got a new set of Elixir5s, a new SLX chainset, and a new pair of Mavic Razors for a little bit more than what I was going to spend on the XTRs. Thank god my birthday only comes once a year!

I have had nothing but success with Shimano brakes of all grades , so how come I have no problems with them ?
maybe i am able to ride my bike properly !! If you have a problem with SHimano brakes then you are doing something wrong . they are the simplest easiest brakes to bleed and adjust.
But what the hell would I know!!
