Advice - Wheels / Hubs and all things related

Hey,

I'm in the market for some advice, while out at Cloon on my bike there on Saturady I managed to buckle my front wheel. The wheel is a Bonterage UST one that came stardard on my Trek Fuel EX 8.

I'm not sure what I want to do from here, here is what I think are some options.

- Go buy some Mavic Crossmax'x
- Get some custom wheels built 1) - Hope Pro's with 819 Rims
2) - XT hub with 819's

- Or even get my wheel rebuilt with some new rims and spokes

I have being planning on upgrading the wheel set for a while so will be changing both wheels now.

I main like to ride Dublin / Wicklow trails with All mountain style stuff for good measure. I hit the scales at almos 120kg so thats why I'm thinking the 819 rims are what I need ?

The wheels must be UST. I would love to be able to buy local (Dublin) as opposed to online but being self employed which can be worse than unemployed these days its hard not to be swayed by some of the deals on offer in Merlyin and Chain reaction.

So tell me what should I be looking for and when should I be looking to buy, I know James in OC builds wheels but where are other quailty options in terms of service and value.

Byrner already gave me some advice today, so I know that I need round wheels and black tyres :)

Adrian
Hope Pro's with 819's is a faultless setup, but a cheaper option would be ZTR Flows (strong) on XT hubs. People moan about Shimano hubs but for the kind of riding you do, and with an annual service they will fine, they are also a LOT cheaper than Hopes.
yes..I also told you go see Alfie in Expert Cycles in Rathfarnham..Adrian..you want sturdy wheels until you lose that Powerfat !! then you can fooster about in the mcinerney school of Wheelgeekery !
I'm going to give Alfie a shout in the morning.

Powerfat, now there is an idea

Tell me are those ZTR Flow rims better/stronger than the 819's?
no...not from what I've seen ..don't mind Don, Hopes are the only game in town. Sealed bearings vs cones..get away from me with your mechanical illiteracy !!

I would not use anythig else if I had to pay for stuff.
Who do you know that rides everything..
DH, FR,XC,CX,Road.
That would be me..
Why anybody would listen to anybody elses opinion is beyond me,
At least your talking some sense on this thread Richard, not like over on the other one with your cobwebs!!
I have repaired 819s with Duct tape !
see if you can do the same with with ZTRs.
Ztr flow rims on hope hubs will do the job Adrain. They are strong enough for what you ride and lighter than the 819s so will suit the xc side of it more.
It's worth going the extra few bob for the bomb proof hope hubs.
I have them on the Shova and you know the abuse they get. No dings, never had to true them and never had a tyre burp on them.
Right Oh looks like its Hopes for me of Bren & Richie say so who am I to say differant.

Could do without the expense after just buying new tyres, changing the bearings in the rear piviot and getting the forks serviced.

But sure needs must!
how much lighter..a pound, a kilo..2 kilos.. a stone.
Because thats the only way they are ever going to be any real difference.
Grams just don't mean sh1t..
Its what your heart and balls are made of what counts in Mountainbiking...or your T1ts and ovaries...
Not what weight the bits of your bike weighs..
Trust me.
lose the weight off your arse ..that makes more difference.
When I was looking for a tubeless wheelset for the HT, and knowing they were not going to have a hard life I went XT, much to the snorts of derision you see here. Simply could not justify the extra required for the Hopes. If the bearings go in your Hopes of you go to Alfie or James as it's not a DIY job, cup and cone are dead easy to work on and parts are cheap, you just need to be willing to take them apart once a year and service them.

I went two years previously on Deore hubs with no problems at all.

However, if you intend to give your wheels a good kicking Hopes are the default choice.
To be honest I couldn't give a ****e about the weight of components, all I want to to ride my bike and have the craic. And for the stuff I use to work as it should as trouble free as possible!

Not too much to ask?

I've started back at the running with aim for ultra Marathon in 6 months so hopefull that and more biking will shed all the extra Powerfat or at least some of it.
now Adrian..you should also know..that while I am a Nazi and all about the Ubermench..i also value Personality..which is worth more, So choose wisely.
