If youre going to be riding then just uploading straight to pinbike or youtube I would say you wouldn't notice a big difference.
I would say youd be fine with 960, assuming you dont have editing software that renders in 1080 anyway.
You also miss out on 60fps shooting ,if that matters to you?

60fps is a huge benefit, you can slow it down in post processing to 25-30fps and get a lovely smooth slow(ish) motion effect. I can't wait to get my hands on one of those yokes!
The worst thing about these is the lack of being able to preview the footage.
you can buy an adapter for the hero for this purpose(small screen)
or get the Contour as you can connect it to your iphone and preview it.
there is nothing more annoying than shooting footage and when you get to look at it, it's crooked, you have then waisted all your time, also you have to open up the hero to get the card out and in doing so it's easy to move it. so don't be fooled into thinking that it's a piece of cake.
I have the Contour HD & the standard Contour before it.. it shoots 720p at 60 frames per second or 1080p at 30 frames per second.. I've also used the GoPro but not the HD version...
IMO.. unless your making a lot of videos or are into making videos then most of the extra features are simply a load of useless cack...

I used it once as far as I can remember.. it looks great but unless you have something specifically for slo mo shots then its just kind of pointless.... and as for GPS on a camera... holy f'ing sh!tballs what a ridiculous pointless gimmick.. especially designed for gullible twats... seriously, what is the point.. do you want to watch a video or look at a moving dot on a map..??
As long as you can record what your actually seeing on the trail and the recording is of reasonably good quality then that is all that matters.. you'll probably use the slow motion crap once just to try it and never use it again...
You also need a powerful PC to work with HD video / codecs and lots and lots of patience to edit the video's to any decent kind of standard.. and most of the time the videos are compressed once again when you upload them to the web...
Personally, having tried both, I prefer the Contour over the Gopro... it is smaller & has a lower profile when mounted.. has laser sights for lining up the shot (which is great at night time when you can't see a screen) so no need for a screen etc.. but if you want you can get an app for your iphone or android... you can also adjust the camera settings with the phone app as well...
