“Top Mountain bikers from across Europe headed for Fermanagh”

The Lakeland Warrior MTB Marathon is a first for Co. Fermanagh - taking place on 28 August 2011 mountain bikers can take part in either a 100km or 60km Mountain Bike Marathon event. The event is primarily off road, on forest tracks and trails and passes through some of the largest expanses of forest wilderness in Co Fermanagh.

The 100km and 60km mountain biking marathon events have some notable entries with Fermanagh native, mountain runner turned mountain biker, Robbie Bryson heading the local charge in the 100k event. He will be pushed all the way by many mountain bike team riders from Dublin and other parts of Europe.

Event organisers, 26 Extreme, said

“We have been searching for a suitable location for an event in Co Fermanagh for almost two years now and the location and route which has been developed for the Lakeland Warrior event will rival any other event of similar nature. The scenery and wilderness of this event is truly outstanding and it is through an area where few ever venture”.

“In addition to mountain bikers from the local area who have entered we have entries from across Europe and America and there are several people entered who plan to run the 100km on Saturday and cycle the 100km on Sunday”.

“It is hoped that the event will become a yearly fixture on the mountain biking calendar and will attract large numbers of competitors to this area of Co. Fermanagh. From experience of similar events staged in other areas of Northern Ireland it will bring with it both economic and tourism benefits to the local economy with many participants, spectators and families making a weekend break out of the event”.

Has anyone in epic done this event before?
Or have any additional information on it in terms of difficulty?

I am not familiar with the event but I know the Organisers and I'd say it will be great, i'd lead a posse up but , I've too much to do with the Blast and done way too much travelling North.
We'll have to do something about organising this sort of mass participation events down here.

I sent them an email asking for the breakdown of the course, ie singletrack, fireroad & tarmac. Il let you know when I get a reply.

Thanks guys, I found a facebook page for it and it seems as though there is no singletrack? They describe it as all forest road and tarmac, the difficulty being in the distance! Will keep you posted if I find out more info...

yeah i think its more of a Gael Force than a Cooley Thriller

"The event is almost all fireroad with some sections of tarmac linking forests. There is only about 1% singletrack as the forest service DO NOT allow any such trails in the forests. The challenge is in the distance and elevation - not the technicality!"

Sounds like the Cross bike would be ideal!

Sounds a bit boring.. I'm doing the WW instead, plenty of quality trails in it!

I'm in the area for a road race on the Saturday so I'm going to do this on the Sunday. Yeah, the difficulty isn't really the terrain but I have done a couple of these type of thing on the continent and they can be pretty good. The organizers usually run top notch events (I know them from Adventure Racing etc...)

Any news on this,reports or finishing positions???

ryan sherlock won, mel spath was first lady and 6th (i think) overall. i got two punctures and finished 9th . im sure i saw marlena doing the 60k. there was feck all singletrack, there was fire roads,concrete roads,tarmac roads and lots of short steep climbs. this was by no means an easy race , it was very tough going and its in the book for next season !!

That was me (Wendy) not Marlena, although I am flattered that I still look that young (from a distance) :) Came 16th overall in 60km and with a puncture, Delighted.
