Cooley Thriller?

I'm heading up to do the 52km on Saturday! What's the story with it ...... terrain, feed zones, marking (heard some stories!) etc?
Looking at the times from last year I reckon it should take me about 4.5 hours which is a pretty slow average speed so I'm guessing there's some pretty long steep climbs?
It's a great day out. Marking was spot on last year so hopefully the same for this year. Second climb (mostly road to the masts) is the longest but the descent is well worth it. There were two feeds last year, one at the top of the masts and another with about 15 km to go. You wont need to bring a huge amount of stuff with you, just treat it like a long Sunday spin.
Terrain - mostly open mountain singletrack. Some road (to the mast) and very little fireroad. Singletrack that goes on for miles (literately). It also normally has the descent to Carlingford off Sliabh foy to finish things off - it's about 5 minutes of bombing it downhill if you're going well. Last year my arms gave out about a minute in and I had to back off and coast it, bah!
Is there a shorter route for newbies like me, dont think I could 5.2 at the moment but I'm going to try and make it.

You will pay dearly for that
I am doing the 21k with Carol and Caroline so far, if the forecast was better I would do the 54 with them but its not.
Smithers you are more than welcome on my jaunt. Why murder yourself ? I want you back on the team not suffering out there for 6 hours..
we'll be done in 3 hours, time for ice creams and chillin.

I'm not a bit surprised at you Smithers but I can't believe Richie is encouraging such weakness ............ was Terry, Micky, Oz, Ger, Orla and Caroline's success based on "eating ice cream and chillin'"? I think not ....
Just give up on him RL, if he was in the Polish army he would be classified as 'E', for evacuation with handicaped, women and children.
