surely all the extra exposure freecaster is getting via youtube ought to feedback as increased hits on their site
i got an email this week from someone who's never been on a mountain bike, showing me the danny hart clip. can't imagine the viral effect for this would've been as huge without youtube. i showed it to my girlfriend, her first mtb video (next up getting her on the trails)
then i went off and starting rooting around the freecaster site for more footage having no idea what their business model is. yeah, i'd consider paying for access to some event in the future
theres no point freecaster hoping that the mtb community are going to do it a favour and donate money to it like some kind of charity where it feeds back into the grassroots. sports fans are addicts. they will sit and watch any old crap on tv. you just have to get them hooked. it occurred to me while watching the tour de france on tv this year, that to the unitiated, it must seem like a very dull thing to sit and watch for hours. but for me, there was plenty to keep my interest. once you start getting a feel for the big names in the sport, you form a emotional attachment. you also start to learn about the less obvious things like the strategies employed by riders/teams, and have a greater appreciation for superhuman levels of effort dished out now and again. not that many people know anything about DH mtb
nearly every type of sport on tv is incredibly dull if you don't know much about the sport. and actually, DH is probably one of the most exciting sports in that respect. with the rewards going to riders willing to take on the most risk. and the high penalty for failure. lots of crashing. it should be easy to get the interest levels up??
there will always be people who don't want to pay for stuff. you can't try and make everyone pay. look at all the money itunes is making. those people can get all that stuff for free easy if they wanted. but they choose to pay
get as many people interested in the thing as possible by whatever means and then start leeching the cash out of the ones willing to pay
Freecaster need to harness the way people commonly use the web, not try and lock it down into an archaic business model. How many videos would they have sold, and ad-click revenue generated, if it was their youtube channel that had the clips & highlights from the season. They missed the boat on a viral sensation with the danny hart clip... and are now moaning about it. They should be the ones making it widely available and super easy to pay and they will make a ton of cash.

i'll pay the money to watch the live event. and noone who is willing to fork out for the live event is going to settle for a few youtube clips the next day, just because they are free. why try and limit the footage of mtb on youtube. the more on youtube, the more exposure for the sport

I think that's spot on, my thoughts exactly..
However, I agree with Richie that any illegally copied footage shouldn't be posted on this site. We're the most influential mtb related website in Ireland and we should lead by example.

The bootleg videos on youtube have given a lot of publicity about the sport, IMO freecaster should have a youtube channel, they can make money from ads there, and it will give them money from people going back to the main site, and buying the full replay. But they havn't and although it might have given them more money, from it acting as a teaser, then people buying the replay, it's their footage, it should be their choice.
I dont like bootleg videos though, it's their footage after all..
Here you are folks. Direct from freecaster. Watch and enjoy but to really see this run in context, Gwins crash, everyone else's crash for that matter, get the popcorn and buy the replay.
