Lough Derg Challenge - report

Stage 1

It was 25km mostly on tarmac and fireroads, some singletrack but nothing worth mentioning. Two climbs, one long at the start and another smaller towards the end.
We went off fast with Richie Close setting the pace. It was him, Buggle, Kev Stanley, Richard Patrick Felle, me, the american ex pro Chad and some other 2 dudes I didn't know. The group separated into pairs and I ended up riding it together with Chad doing turns at the front to catch Kev and Felle who were in front of us. It was going well until Chad had a mechanical so I was left on my own. Rolled in 5th place not far behind Richie F. It was 58min so short enough.

Stage 2

Felt great at the start and we went off with Richie Close setting the pace again and Buggle behind him in his leader jersey, it felt a bit like a road race with all the tactics and sh1t. Richie F was with us and 4 of us got away and rode together to the top of the course, some tough climb (8km)! At that stage we had about 4-5min gap to the rest of the field.
So happy days I thought and I knew I would move up a spot to 4th overall.... but don't count the chickens before they hatch they say, and not without a reason! I must have rode into some junk like a nail or a barbed wire near those aerials at the top and punctured. Should've fixed it straight away but you know how it is in the race, your brain just does not compute...I fiddled with it too long, tried to ride it with 10psi in it and made all sort of stupid mistakes. Eventually when I lost all of my lead time and others started to catch me I copped on and put the tube in. With 5km to go I wasn't going to get back on the lead train but I was catching a few bodies...until I punctured again (my fault this time, not enough air in the feckin tube!). Had to ride on the flat for the last 3km. Got there in 14th place but with 12min lost so my chances for a podium finish overall had disappeared. Gutted.

I'm in 11th overall and I think I can get 5-6min off the lads in front of me tomorrow so with luck I will get back to the top 6-8.
There is a 25km stage in the morning and 5km sprint through the 2010 NPS course in the afternoon so I'm looking forward to it.

DOK is riding well around 15th spot consistently so he should do well tomorrow as well.

Great event, very well organised. Where there hell is rest of you lot!!??

I've also uploded both stages to Strava if anyone wants to have a look.
Yeah today was savage!

Stage 3

It was 25km again mostly on fireroads some grassy bits and one horrendous bit of muddy rocky descent. Again, the leading group went off from the gun and it included: Buggle, R.Close, R.Felle, myself, Chad (the American) and Martin (the Scot). We rode together until the first grassy descent when it separated and Buggle went off on his own, Felle & Close rode together and me, Chad and Martin not so far behind. It was R. Close and Chad's turn for punctures so we left them behind and I finished in 4th 20sek behind Martin, Felle and Buggle. Made up a few places in GC up to 7th spot.

Stage 4

It was a lap of the old NPS course with a few modifications. We were paired based on the times from Stage 3 so Buggle was off with Felle and me with Martin. I knew I had to make up some time to get the 6th spot and about a minute to move up to the 5th (and catch Kev Stanley in GC). At the start Martin got a mechanical so I was on my own (no chance of working together which we both hoped for!) chasing Buggle and Felle. Rode the whole course smoothly but not to aggressively as I was afraid of getting another mechanical etc. Finished in 3rd with the 3rd time of the day of 22:46. Unfortunately for me Kev had a good lap just over 23min so I didn't mange to get his spot but I moved up to the 6th.

I have to say that although the courses were not that great technically the racing was really good. I was rarely on my own and there was always someone to chase. The tactics that come in to light in those stage races are also really interesting and I think the most important lesson is not to give up and keep going no matter what happens.

Great spot for a short holiday, great event and people. I would highly recommend we get a bigger gang for next year!
Oh yeah, and some dude from Irish Times took the photo of me, Kev and another 2 guys, there will be a supplement in the next few days with an article about it. Apparently some journalist rode this race and will write a report. Great to get some publicity for MTB!
What Max said above about all the stages only much slower and thankfully without the punctures.

Each stage was spent watching the savage train pulling away while trying to settle in an find out who you might be racing or working with/against. Tough climb yesterday afternoon alright, but fun descent and run to finish... this morning fast hard first stage followed in the pm by the NPS loop with its rooty, slidderymess. I did the Sunday race here last year and had an absolute nightmare on this stuff, better this year, but loads of room for improvement, next year...

I ended up 12th, happy with that, but aware that there are loads of people who would be deadly if they turned up at this race.

Pity there werent more Epicers there. It is different to the NPS, but it could compliment it.... €90 is a lot to cough up, maybe we could negotiate a club discount if there were enough travelling.. they do a great job... great buzz about the place too....
well done lads, looks like you had a great time. I was invited along but I couldn't take the weekend off. I'd say judging by the interest this year, next year will be huge.
Well done guys, you did the club proud... was hoping to do this myself this year but couldnt in the end, would definitely be up for it next year.
