Derroura

Well, not been on a bike to well over a week now, between working, travelling and doctors I'm fecking desperate to get on a bike. Am in Galway tomorrow but managed to plan an early departure so was wondering if it was worth a journey to Derroura for a spin around since I'm going to be in the area. I've never been though, are the trails marked like the Ballinastoe lot, and roughly how long will it take to get from Galway city centre to the trail?

Thanks
It will take you around 40-50 mins to get from the city to the trails. It's a continues loop
of 16km, but have a look at the map at the head of the trail first. It's mostly single track with a couple of connecting fire roads. You will also pass another trail on your way out to Derroura in Rosscahill woods. If u have time I'd
Recommend a spin in there too. When u enter rosscahill from Galway there is a pub called kineevys on your
Right, about 100 meters down the road there is a turn off to the right, take this and the enterance to the woods is 3 minute drive, the entrrance will be on your right, it's at a left hand corner.
It will take you around an hour to do the Derroura loop fittness depending. The start of the single track trails are marked with a red lollipop sign. They can be missed handy enough though. From the start of the trail you will go along the fire road for around 5-6 mIns, the single track will start on your right after a bit of a hill. When that single trac ends u will see a big hill in front of you with another fire road, you need to go up that hill untill u reach a mast. Its straight foreward from then on.
Cheers for the directions Froshty and the map Terry, thats a huge help, think I am gonna head to Roscahill first, then Derroura after if there is time.
Well managed to get both trails in, and two dissimilar trails you'll not find! Both deadly.

Roscahill, fantastic trail, rooty narrow, twisty, nothing to steep or technical either up or down, just lots of really cool single track and "natural terrain". Thats not taking away from the Connemara MTB crew who built and maintain it, some great work gone into that, but it has a natural forest feel that I really like similar to http://showme.co.za/knysna/tourism/h...e-cycle-route/
Bit Schlompy in places, not quite a donkey festival (although there was one nearby)

Derroura on the other hand much more "man-made " feel to it, similar to Ballinastoe and 3 rock Metro's, hardpack rocky single track, very fast flowing but you'll be glad for good small bump settings on your forks, great views, fantastic switchback corners.

Personally I preffered Roscahill so thanks so much for the heads up, but I'll happilly visit Derroura again, got a Strava segment to improve on :) all in all a great evening on two new trails I'd never done before, loved it!
