What's the dealio with strava lately? it appears everyone is creating ridiculous segments just so they can be KOM or whatever. There's a segment on our road between two sets of traffic lights, it's 50 m of flat road ffs! goons are also splitting up climbs so that they can be KOM over a particular short section!
Now, Iv no interest in league tables etc.. but when I review a spin there's about 30 segments and its a pain in the arse.
yeah..i've given up on it to be honest. bewtween my house and the shop theres about 50 segments. Some people are savage between one set of lights and the next but I don't ever remember seeing them at any races !!
I tried to create a segment from the sofa to the jax but couldn't get a GPS signal in the house... probably for the best though as Id probably have some goon bursting in the toilet door whilst I was delivering a food baby.
I'm a real Strava fan! Don't really bother with the segments but I find it a great way of keeping track of time, distance, mts climbed etc! Being a nosey sod it also lets me compare to other people I know. Sort of Facebook for cyclists! I've tried Training Peaks but I find it much less user friendly! Also great for reviewing a track for a race the following year!
But everyone to their own!
I can see the attraction , I think its a great tool to motivate people out on to bikes but as usual its a useful thing thats been ruined by idiots , though , you don't have to pay them any attention if you don't want to.
I use it for the road mostly. Its good to for finding new road routes etc... I think the offroad aspect needs allot of work... according to the segments section people are riding the likes of Benchcut in less than a minute... for the road, the functions also allow you to quickly see your accumulated time/distance for a given week or month and this is useful. The heart rate functions are also handy and well displayed
yeah..theres some amount of cheating going on , on the MTB sections..obviously some people cannot see corners , i rarely put my mtb up..because of the ridiculous times I have seen on some mtb sections..I know the losers are taking shortcuts

You're right Oz, there are all sorts of issues with segment timing. I think you only need to hit 70% of the measured points on any given segment to be given a time on that segment and GPS is just not accurate enough for a trail like Benchcut where the track traverses forward and back on a slope. I'm guessing that you could run straight down the hill and be given a time ....... must try it!!
I'm guessing that they will develop the Premium membership to allow members to plan training etc!
