Can anyone point me in the right direction? Where is the best place to buy a 6 year old his first mountain bike? Any particular bikes better than others for kids? Cheers

the best bike for kids are IslaBikes..but you have to get them from the UK..
if you want to buy an actual MTB for a 6 year old then obviously I am going to say Giant , however, all the big brands make good MTBs for kids..and I mean the big brands.
Kids bikes are a hard one to judge.
you will spend €300 on a decent kids 20" /24" bike..you will probably get a year out of it. You will then force the kid to keep riding it till you feel you have gotten your moneys worth.

Ask yourself this, do you want him to be an MTBer because you are ? or does he fancy it ?
I would strongly consider a BMX and BMXing..they are by far the only Cycling Discipline in Ireland that is organised from the kids up.
Irish MTB is a shambles where Kids MTB is concerned..
I can speak with authority on this because I spent several years doing it, passed it on and now it has stopped happening.
If you want your kid to ride bikes..then BMX is the way to go.
MTB is a dead end for kids, nobody is committed to developing it and frankly nobody gives enough of a fu*k to sacrifice their own riding for it.

I bought a Cube 20" for my daughter whos 5 and big for her age, the bike is super strong but also quite heavy for the size of it and most of the components are all full size which is handy for spares but things like biggish brake levers and a saddle the size of a couch make it a tad out of proportion ...I paid 330 for it .. Ive no doubt it will last for years but its defo not the lightest for little legs to push around !!! Giant Areva for girls and xtc for the boys are well worth looking into if you defo want a kids MTB .....Goodluck
