Well, Ticknock is a hard place to run an XC race..its hard enough to get permission for it in the first place . The weather was against MAD but it made no difference to the racing. the course was riding great and felt like a real adventure for an XC race..MAD had done a fair bit of tweaking to make it rideable and thank God..4 times up Toms would break anybody..actually two times up Toms would break anybody.
I got a great start in S2 up the Tarmac but kept it cool and took a fine inside line to get a good run in to the singletrack..that was a really nice stretch of singletrack down and back across to the bombhole ! I got to the bomhole in fine style and very calm..however two lads , one was Gene Ryan from MAD fell in front of me at the bottom of the bombhole and as I was reluctant to ride over them I stalled at the lip of the bombhole and as soon as they recovered , I fell into the feckin Bombhole and landed on my head and my hip..it burst open the cradle on my helmet and for an instant I felt woozy but after a lifetime of booze and drugs I'm accustomed to that so off i went and a big thanks to everybody who asked me was I alright. I had a bit of an ouchy on my hip but I kept going..caught back up to Smithers somewhere , passed Mickky , then he passed me and stayed there..he feckin stayed there all the way for the 4 laps..just out of reach ..him and bleedin Eamon McConvey and Phil Tighe and some lad in his pyjamas and CLive Caldwell. then at the end of lap 3 Steo caught me, and we went along together I was pretty sure he was winning as Hoppo was after wearing out his Hanger ..then I passed Clive and Phil was weeping beside the trail and after a struggle to get my bleeding pump out of my jersey I gave him my pump, then feck Lasko passed me , damnit ..so I had to get by him again..then there was Mickky and Eamon.." crash you *******s , crash " but no..passed a few more people..I was comfy..no heart attack pains or rasping breath..I was in the comfy race zone..Mickky and Eamon were mine for the taking once they got a mechanical or a crash..its ok..then bleedin Clive goes by me again..then Robin huffhufffgasphuff ..jaysus that can't be good for you !
THen Buggle went by me quietly but then we started yapping about being too old for this and having to give up the drink and I let him go because it was getting to be hyperbarically painfull to chat and pedal.. then Gar McKee passed me and he got caught behind Clive and some Junior lad and Mickky and Marlena and Pyjama Guy..and Eamon , always Eamon..then Colm from IMBRC came by me and I fell over and got wrapped around a tree and all my bad juju came back to haunt me as I was willing them all to crash in front of me..it was one of those I hate this track moments on to the fireroad and up to Metro..into the shizzle and I came across Erica fiddling with her bike , I could see Eamon and Colm and just couldn't make the gap ..what am I like I was thinking ! How many laps left , where am I ? are they my feet , whats that marshalls name ?
finished happy , all my bits intact and felt good..I remembered why I love XC racing today..its hard, its a test of skill and strength , your bike has to be awesome and because you are operating at your limit the execution of your skills and temperment have to be bang on..
A big thanks to MAD , brilliant marshalling, horrible tape
, great loop especially the section before Toms..I thought it was a great mix of climbing and descending..there was a great atmosphere all over the track, EPIC dominated which shows that we are at heart really gnarly hard *******s !! But then that might have something to do with The Club President
I have to say I loved every minute of it..well except the horrible but that led to A1 Sharon..jays everytime I got to that it was like time had slowed down and everybody was grinding along at a speed of -1 kph..
ANd a big thanks to our supporters on the day, Adrian Visible Panty Line, Oscar, Jack, RichardL ( thanks for asking me if I was ok when I binned myself in the bombhole and Rory , Paddy and Joe McCall of Team I love Dermot Gavin
, it helped me to get going again) and thanks to my Sponsors, Giant, Lidl Merlot and Dominoes Pizza , without them I wouldn't have got out of bed this morning..my new Tattoo was burning with the fires of Gethsemane today and I couldn't see a bleeding thing half the time with the spectacles on..
