broken collarbone

anyone had or experience with a broken collarbone? i have a nice break on the right side with about 50% displacement so it protrudes under the skin. i saw a specialist today and i can either let it heal and keep it in a sling for 8 weeks or more and see what happens or get a plate put in that will straighten it up and strenghten it and will be back a lot sooner. i have no issues getting a plate in as it can be done soon and in a day? any thoughts welcome. thanks
never had one broken but had loads of stories of them not getting back together properly and ending up with surgery anyway. get a plate would be my guess!
Shit sorry to hear that man. Peter Buggle is your man to talk to. He had a plate put in last year and your nearly as fast as him on the bike nowadays ....!!!!
Get the surgery canto. Its a simple procedure and very effective. If you don't get it plated it could take considerably longer to heal due to the displacement.
And where would you get it done? There is a shoulder specialist where I work who is really good
Sorry to hear that Canto it's a real shame..but I have to take my hat of to you for getting back on your bike and battling to the end of the race and coming in 5th...a true sportsman..on the collarbone issue I'd say have the surgery,at least you know it will heal right...speedy recovery Man.
It depends on the break, I had a cracked collarbone and was advised to sling it and forget it, can still feel the "bump" but never a moments bother once settled. Lauren had a full break, but very little displacement so again sling and forget (not that she wore the bloody thing). If there is significant displacement I would say the plate, but if you are in doubt get a second opinion. Erica and Oz are much better placed to comment, maybe go see her recommended surgeon, alternatively the guys out at the Sports Surgery clinic near Ikea are fantastic, my knee is better than it ever was!

I hope you recover soon mate, and I have a turbo trainer gathering dust if you want borrow it

sorry to hear canto .id go for the surgery ,collarbones can be tricky if they dont heal properly ,be worth it in the long run.
Broke mine 3 places last October.
Got sent home from VHI Clinic saying it was muscle damage, it didn't hurt bad at all , was walking round with it for a week until I went to a physio and she sent me for an x-ray realized it was broken and actually separated.
Slinged it for two weeks, met the consultant, he basically said its not going to heal he suggested I get the surgery or I can sling it for 8 weeks and it might knit, into the Beacon, surgery, out the next day Plated and 5 steel screws mid October,. Was back on the bike first week of January.
All i'll say is you'll have trouble sleeping on the side you broke for a long time, I'm still uncomfortable lying on the broken side, just a pinch feeling Apparently that should be gone in about 10 months or so according to my specialist.
Get the surgery canto at least you can put a positive timescale on it then
We'll miss you on the spins...hurry back
