Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome

I got a viral infection 2 weeks ago which gave me a bacterial throat infection, doctor gave me antibiotics to clear up the throat, finished the meds yesterday and the doctor told me that I'd have a weakened immune system from the drugs and that the virus could leave me with Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome which could leave me weak and tired for weeks or months, great news for my race training. Managed to get the flu today to set things back even more but at least it'll be gone in a week max. Anyway, the PVFS is the main problem, it makes training tough cos it can last for ages and if I overdo the training I'm more likely to get sick again, anyone suffered from this, I need help!
Gutted for you. I have no ideas other than the obvious like rest, train sensibly and go crazy on nutrition. Oh and rest. I had the flu last week, nasty bugger, and I am still whacked. Best of luck.
Hi Stevo, that sucks. Check out this book by an Irish Doctor and Author, John Mc Kenna. He is the Doctor people in Ireland turn to when nothing else is working that the other doctors are prescribing. There is this little girl in our apartment block that he helped cure after no other doctors could help her. She had some problem with her gut which was affecting her immune system. He fixed it through diet and natural supplements. There are good sections in the book about how to restore the flora in your gut after it has been ruined by antibiotics. This flora or good bacteria in your gut counts for more than 75% of your bodies immune system. You should consume live yoghurt or get good quality probiotic tablets. Also up your dose of Vitamin C to at least 1000 mg per day. Easiest way to ensure that is by taking those Beeline or Rubex water effervesent tablets. Here is the link to his book : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Natural-Alte.../dp/0717134350
Hope this helps
Nice one doctor Oz, I've had a few major bouts of flu followed by constant coughing (about 3 months!) - tried the 'natural' gut supplements - made me worse. Time, rest and lots of food and drink (tea not Guinness) help.
Was talking to Shona Sunday about nutrition, I may go back for more info. The same thing messed me up last year so I've given up alcohol, done up a food diary and upped my nutrition and tried to build up my training from January. I thought I was strong but its very easy to over train and being sick last year didn't help. I'm taking probiotics and live yogurt, oh and rest, the hardest one of all! Thanks folks, I'll look into that book to Alzer, cheers.
I'd just forget about it Steve and get on with your normal routine. I think to confirm that you have the pvfs you'd have to constantly wrecked for at least 6 months. Don't mind the doctor saying what you 'could have'! Get over the flu and back to training!
Sounds rough Steve, for something potentially so serious I'd be getting a second opinion. If inconclusive get some rest and nutrition then ease back into your routine and listen to your body. You'll know what you able for.

Speedy recovery.
anyone remember my sebatical from biking two years ago.... be very careful Stevo I had to give up work and didn't get out of bed for 6 months it was a really rough time.
don't know that this is exactly what you have but you need to rest and recover PROPERLY. The worst thing is I was doing everything right and couldn't get my body to recover. Don't waste your time on "miracle cures" and doctors. I spend a fortune on these
