I'm tentative, Christmas party (with free bar) on Friday. If I'm alive I'm there, either way, have a ball.
Unfortunately I can't this week it's my Dads 70th birthday. But I am considering cleats & wondering if a v accident prone sort of person could kill themselves in them..... ?
I'm in Terry - cheers!
being clipped in is amazing! you'll never regret it.

Caroline , I hated them at first because I would struggle to get my feet out if I needed and would fall over. It's important to adjust the thing on the pedal that the cleat clicks into so that it's not too tight so when you twist your foot left or right, you can clip out.

I had mine too tight and one time at band camp, my handlebar hit off a tree which sent me to the right, I couldn't clip out fast enough and ended up in a river. Thankfully it wasn't too deep so me and the bike were fine, just a bit cold and shook up. I'm an idiot though so don't let this put you off :)

Once you get used to them, they are great and you will feel more secure and it will become second nature.

Some people like Mal prefer the flats with the grip which you have to wear special shoes with. You are not clipped in, but your feet are still pretty stuck tight to the pedals.
I won't be making this one, will see you on the next one.

Flats are the only way to go. Get a good pair of shoes and pedals and you may as well be clipped in. They are great for learning new stud on the bike one less thing to worry about.
I've got dmr vaults with 5ten shoes the pins are out a good 12mm so you do need to ware some knee and shin protection just in case your foot slips off and the pedal hits your leg (not nice at all at all)
I love flats.....
Ok thanks for replies and enjoy tmw. Alzer im guaranteed to do something equally as ridiculous or if not worse at band camp - but looks like there the awful way forward .....just so I can be club champion next year of course ....watch out pros ..ha ; ).....hmm
See you in the morn gang! Caroline, try the clips, once u get used to them you'll never look back. As Al said adjust the tension on the pedal so u can pull out easier initially. The standard cleats that come with the pedals are "unidirectional" meaning u have to kick your ankle out to release but you can get "multidirectional" which once you pull hard enough in any direction your foot will release. You're gonna have a couple of spills clipped in, you're also gonna have a stationary fall and we'll all laugh, you will too but once you're used to them they're deadly and you'll wonder how u ever did without them :)
