Great to see a long discussion on the forum again regarding the Blitz, I'm putting this one under general so everyone can have a go . . .
What's hot and what's not on tyres these days? What are you using? What do you love/hate?
I'll start off with - I still love my Continental Mountain Kings - so brilliant and the back of the bike, I can't see myself changing anytime soon. They're 26" of greatness and 2.2" wide
Winter: I have Conti Baron 2.4 projekt (new version) on the front and Conti Trail King 2.2 back - great set up in my opinion with loads of grip (I am a very average rider if not shit and can feel the grip so must be even better for someone good). Pros: grip, easy tubless set up, both tyres laugh at anything sharp, long lasting and roll pretty well
Cons: bit on the have side I think and price is an issue even if you get them from Germany (set of tyres around €90, here one probably over €60-€70)
Summer: Conti MK 2.4 front and Conti MK 2.2 rear good but did only one year with them and not fully convinced - something is missing there but not sure what. Thinking about changing to maybe something from maxxis but not sure about it yet.
Mountain kings for Winter, although I reckon I'd increase to 2.4 Mountain Queen front. X kings or trail kings for summer. I used to love my ignitors and Larson TT s but the latter just don't suit Irish conditions, very much a dry pack tyre.
Currently have a set of 650b Bruce Gordon Rocknroad ( made by Panaracer) on an old Trek6700 that are the bomb for commuting :)
Let's not forget Hutchinson Fusion tubeless on the road bike...do Roadbikes matter :)
Mountain kings 2.2 front and rear in the winter, MK front and race king for spring and race kings all round for the club league cause the club course tends to be dry regardless of the weather :-).
I had a WTB Trail Boss on the rear for a while. The carcass is slightly flatter with big side lugs. They seal really easily to wtb rims. I found that you could (had to) run them a few psi lower than the Conti's. This tyre is currently on Tara's bike��.
I am a fan of Maxxis tyres. My favorite combination is Ardent on the back tried on small (26" & 650b) and big wheels, HRII on the front wheel. Use to ride HRI, DHF and DHR, too XC the first, too DH the last two... I would like to switch to a lighter combination, anybody tried Schwalbe Rocket Ron? Intended use: XC/Trail?
PD: never found any confidence with the MountainKing, they hate me :-)
