2016 XC NPS: Round 1 Course preview

Took the job of Max's chauffeur today and headed up to Union Wood in Sligo for a look at the course...]

Track is all natural and mature woodland, so get back to your roots and get training!

Dave is totally ****ysing them right now, running some equation to figure out what his heart rate should be at every 100m :)
167 average, 180 seconds over 180... :-) :-) :-)

I'm planning on riding my bike as fast as I can for as long as I can, I'll find someone slightly faster than me and chase them, pass them and find the next person to chase. that's it. Maybe that's not the way to be thinking but that's the way I'm thinking.

I find someone slightly slower than me and try stay ahead of them so I'm not last, it's harder than it sounds :)
So - following on from Erica's suggestion that I geek it up... (and this is just for kicks and giggles) If you want to get in some specific training for this round of the NPS my reading of the video and Strava data is...

Climb 1: Distance = 300 meters, assent = 26 meters (Road)
Climb 2: Distance = 300 meters, assent = 29 meters (Road)
Climb 3: Distance = 300 meters, assent = 23 meters (Road)
Climb 4: Distance = 600 meters, assent = 45 meters (Road and single track) This looks like the climb out of Ewoks and Sparticus combined.

Don't be fooled by the numbers; whilst 150 meters of climbing per lap does not sound particularly bad each climb is around 10% grade (on average) which is pretty savage when you are doing them multiple times (lap count below) at race pace trying to hold off another rider or pass someone.

For the descents it looks kinda like Chisel (tight, muck, mud and roots but with more of it and steeper in places - Maybe those who have ridden the course in Sligo can give their views on equivalent/similar trails near Dublin).

...and for the truly dedicated - lots of press ups / bench/ side bench / core work for all the technical sections.

Number of Laps: Standard lap counts

Mens
S1: 5
S2: 4
S3: 3
S4: 2

Women
S1: 4
S2: 3
S3: 2

U16: 2
U14: 2 (short)

You have three weeks (get out there) :-)

I did put the qualifier "über" in front of the word Geek!
Anyways, like Dave says, the course can be quite physical in places, the fireroads are gravelly and steep/loose gravel so you may arrive into the singletrack feeling a bit dizzy, this is where you could make up places as people flounder around in front of you, although you'll always get those who fall off on the racing line and get in your way, so could be quite a battle getting through....
Here's a nice pic of the "Peanut Butter" trail... Though it's steeper in real life!
