OK, I kind of want to better at this racing lark, tonight was a real struggle. What's good to eat the day of the race, and when, to ensure there is some fire in the engine? Really, I want to know.
Energy and racing
Can't wait to see what sort of answers your going to get here Don. Try loads of water the day before and the day of the race, also an energy bar of some sort an hour before the race and Zym in your water bottle for before and during the race.
Thanks for the advice lads, via phone and PM, I suspect dehydration was part of the problem so next week it will be a lot more water and better food before hand. I drank half a water bottle before hand with some Zym, maybe not enough. I'm not drinking during the race, maybe I should.
Big plate of pasta for lunch always has me feeling much better than anything else.
Apparently top riders have musli with apple juice instead of milk. leave to soak for an hour before eating. Sounds horribe.. Oz will probably give you all the info you want.
he knows his oxo's.

just try harder you fat slacker..there are no shortcuts to savagery !! I'm sick of Fat people coming on here looking for shortcuts to where people like myself and mr fecker are at..we didn't get these fab bodies from eating Muesli soaked in Apple juice or Female Hormone tablets like Smithers..
Hard work , discipline, early to bed and early to rise and cutting your hair and staying away from drugs..
My favourite race food is a Toasted Tuna sandwich on lightly toasted Granary Bread with a pint of Ribena...
It used to be 10 cups of coffee, 20 major and a breakfast roll..but the Doctor doesn't think thats helping my blood pressure.

yeah , with your pathetic 12 minute laps !!
Nothing fancy Don..
Make sure your always hydrated...small amounts of water regularly throughout the day..necking a litre of water will only cause you to pass it straight away.
Low GI (carbs; wholemeal pasta/taters/porridge is a good one) foods will release glucose at a constant/slower rate. Not sure about the muesli one, contains lots of nuts which can be hard to break down/absorb.
High GI foods (sugary) cause your blood glucose climb which causes insulin release which pulls your blood glucose back down. This is somewhat over-rided during race conditions. So, using glucose based-drinks (sports drinks) during but not before races is ok.
Club races are 35 - 45 minutes long...no need for glucose supplementation....liver has 45 - 60 mins store of glucose (in form of glycogen). Glycogen stores are replenished via chips in Palmers afterwards.
Unless your putting in serious training supplements are not necessary, a balanced diet is good.
Now, I shall accept all the abuse.......

Peanut Butter Sambos. Taste great, seem to work great too.
Wow !! Oz..you're a Nutrigeek !!
Pasta, water, got it, no more blowing up next week.
I kinda liked it when you didn't come steaming past me like most weeks - how far can I get before Don and Cathal pass me this week?
Food wont stop you blowing up unless its a cake on a stick strapped to the front of the bike.
White pasta isn't good....wholemeal pasta/basmati rice is better

I wouldn't use me or CJ as any kind of barometer, I used the granny on a couple of climbs, CJ used it for the whole race, you didn't go near it! There's weird voodoo up there.
