Powder Coating Help!

I'm itching to have this done to my bike but have a couple of questions I'd appreciate some guidance on. I've looked around and Tallaght Powder Coating really seem to know their stuff but I'm reluctant to dismantle my Spicy on my own.

One of the main questions is if I did dismantle all the bushings and pivots would these need to be replaced or just re-united with the frame after the spray job? removing the bottom bracket and forks, are these areas that should be worked on by a true surgeon or will a calm relaxed approach with some soothing music + the right tools get a gunter like me and the patient through the job.

Is there a Surgeon out there that would undertake to strip the bike for a fee?

Anyone can strip it but not everyone can put it back together correctly!! My advise give it someone who knows their stuff!!

I got a frame done by Tallaghta Powder Coating and while it looks good from far away up close its not the best job. On their site they claim to strip the old paint etc off and start with the frame bare. On the frame I got back under close inspection you could see where they didn't remove the old decals and just went over them. Also the bb and headtube wasn't well masked off. There pricing is a bit random I was quoted 150 for a hardtail frame and i know of others that had got full sus frames front and back end for 120. Also a few frames that some of the dh riders got done didn't exaclty come out as planned colour wise. The few frames that Mark Gilbert has done seem to be done with a bit more care and attention to detail also he has a propper pricing structure.

yeah I got my Sunday done by Mark. Excellent job and its pretty hard waring. He had to spend ages on my frame as it had been sprayed before and they just sprayed over the original paint :eek: He still charged me the original price even though it was twice the work. Definitely give him a buzz.

I spoke with John today. Here's a price list and more info.

Price list for Autumn/Winter:

Any Hardtail: €100

Any Single Pivot Frame (224/Bullitt etc): €150

Any Multi pivot Frame (Glory/Kona/V10 etc): €165

As above, This price includes:
Stripping
De-greasing
Undercoat
Powdercoat in any RAL code colour
Clear-coat
Cleaning/Facing the frame and Polishing the frame with a high quality wax.
(You can have each individual part of the frame painted a different colour, but lead time & price will increase)
Standard lead time is 10 days from when I get your frame, but usually less.

All frames are stripped by hand, not bead blasted, and inspected for cracks before painting. Bearings should be left in the frame and new ones fitted after painting (You might as well have it working like new if it's gonna look like new!) and we would highly recommend using OC Tuning for this work!

hey Mark
A few people might wanna know so I'll post it here - do you spray forks without having to disassembling the forks?
Ie; it'd just be the lowers needing a paint job

I can powdercoat fork lowers, but they need to be completely stripped of seals and bushings - The heat from oven-baking the paint will melt them.

For a standard frame with forks - 2 colour finish €120.00

Just to point out the differences between the service I offer and those offered by Tallaght Powdercoating;

I can only do a small number of frames in comparison to Tallaght Powdercoating in the same time frame.
My turnaround time is about 3 times longer than Tallaght Powdercoating, for the following reasons:

1. I can usually organise to collect your frame at a time and place conveinient to you
2. I will dismantle your Full Suspension frame as part of the standard price
3. All frames are stripped by hand and back to bare metal, no paint/stickers/decals-anywhere
4. All frames are inspected thoroughly for any visible damage/cracks to tubes, welds, ISCG mounts etc, and I'll inform you before your frame is painted and will not charge for stripping the frame if it is found to be in need of repair first.
5. I will advise if Bearings/Bushings will need replacing, what the cost will be, and can organise to have them done by OC Tuning.
6. Cleaning facing and re-assembly of your frame is included in the Standard Price.
7. For a small additional fee I can Take your bike as a whole, and return it to you as a complete bike, ready to ride, rather than just a frame.
8. I will usually return your frame personally at a time and place conveinient to you.

Lastly, I have a Full time job which pays the mortgage/Bills!
I choose to Paint/Recondition bikes because they are my passion, just like they are yours.
I'm not interested in painting Alloy wheels/Rocker-covers/Roll cages gates or raillings, Just Bikes!
As i only take on one frame at a time, you are my sole customer at that time. I don't have to worry about Volumes or turnover, only the quality of service!
I've been in the mountainbike scene for about 13 years now, and thoroughly enjoyed it, this is just my little way of giving something back!
