If I buy a bike on a UK website whats the chances of the postman arriving at my door demanding 21% VAT?. I've heard they are starting to clamp down on internet purchases. Anyone got any experience of this ?. Would getting the bike delivered to my work address reduce the possibility of getting stung ?
Buying a bike on the internet
I've never heard of that from within the euro zone. I understood it was only if you reclaim the uk vat that you have to pay the Irish one. Sure isn't every crc purchase out of the UK?
There's no extra duty or VAT payable on any items purchased in the EU.
No Irish vat payable on goods imported from eu, you pay Uk vat (included in the price you see advertised) only.
thanks lads, should really know this stuff but just had a niggling feeling about it ...
You should not have to pay the vat if you are registered here and purchasing within the eu as long as they are sure it is export and you can issue a purchase order from your business.
I have purchased from evans and crc in the past using this, you end up paying 17ish% less again.

if you supply them with an irish vat number say from your granny (ring) or someone,
and tell them that they do not have to charge you vat on an export.
Then you can get it less the vat
But you have to tell them bluntly to do it as they often they don't know this and it is perfectly legit(except the granny bit).

but if i do manage to get them to deduct the UK Vat, which won't be easy, then I would defnitiely be (legally) liable for the Irish vat, whereas if I pay the Uk Vat then I won't be liable for the Irsh Vat, no ?
btw - did you receive your lights yet from dealextreme ? how long did it take ?

if you supply them with a vat number then they will deduct the vat from the item on export.because it is within the eu there will be no vat charged on the import.
I have done this before on camera gear bought in from the uk and because you never claimed the vat in the first place then it would seem to be a bit of a loophole.
If there was an audit of your vat number through the uk then it may pop up
but highly unlikely as you have'nt done us out of vat only the pome.
dealextreme fcuked up my order so i had to cancel it and reorder(pissed off with it)
so looks like it will take another few weeks, cnuts
cheers
