DU bush - you've made 'the list'!

Freaking Giant and their DU bushes!!! The latest one has only lasted a couple of months, that's about 15 spins in Don land, what do they make these things out of, jello?

its not giant its all suspension systems. Ther made of soft stuff so your suspension feels nicer. There a consumable much like tubes and oiling your chain. There generally teflon coated brass but depeding on the bushing and application you can use a self lubricating nylon bush they work a bit better and are more durable but wouldn't be suitable for your trance.

I have a twelve year old specialized fsr and have never had to change one piece of the suspension,on the back end,before every cycle i oiled the joints with wd40 and everyone laughed,
however now that the bike is still going I am wondering are we all mad not to be oiling
these parts,as i think there is no such thing as self lubricating,where does the lube come from?
once the bit of grit/water gets in there is self destructing,i agree with al they are made of soft stuff but think a small squirt of oil can do no harm.
even my poxy lapierre only 2.5 years old and has seen more spanners than a mechanics tool box,I think they are just made of ****e these days myself.

Everything is made with making more money in mind, what is the point of making something that never breaks, good for us but bad for the companys that make them, if things never break then they would soon be out of buissnes.
There is a fine line though between making things completely crap and servicable parts, i had a clubroost VCV2/100 frame and the bottom bush was made of nylon, every 5-6 DH race you would have to change the bloody thing, i took it to an engineering shop and they made me a hardened steel one (inner and outer) and fitted a grease point and the thing lasted for ever.

i just wore out the threads on the drive side of my Patriots bottom bracket !!..

Mcnipples are you sure you never need a du bushin replaced The fsr link bikes are the most prone to wearing out the lower bush on the shock. It all depends on how much rotation the shock bush goes through as the bike cycles through its travell. On FSR bikes the lower one goes through 3/4 of a rotation as the bike moves up and down. The same can be said for the top shock mount on the trance and the lapierres as they have a similar amount of movement. Single pivot bikes like the patriot etc don't have nearly as much movement and as a result the du bushes don't wear as much. Du bushes are a cheap consumable at €4. Id much rather have them wear out than have sticky crappy suspension and not have to replace them. Everyone seems to think the more you spend on your bike the less you should have to look after it. Its quite the opposite high performance means high maintenance.

That doesn't sound good, the bracket it's self or the theads in the frame?

add in to the mix the crappy **** weather we endure and the feckin gritty rain we ride in..I don't believe mcNipples lies about the Specialized either ! but I also don't believe that self lubricating crap either..
but what about the wore out threads in my BB shell..I've bonded the fcuker in..
is it time to retire the old girl !

Al, I don't think any of us believe these feckers are cheap to run, all we ever do is throw money at them!! 12 months old, 3 DU bushes and every pivot bearing replaced. I used to get nearly a year out of the DU bush on the NRS, the Trance seems to eat them, and I'm a stone lighter this year!

The Spicy is still for sale if you retire the old girl!!!!! Just found out I can hack onto someones wi-fi!!!!!

ive only replaced the bushes on mine once don,your too fussy.

Llandai I would be carefull there you have the iphone and it costs €12 for internet access abroad!!!

Your probably doing twice as much biking than you did on the nrs.


A du bush is self lubricating. It doesn't mean it doesn't wear out it just means it stays running smooth till it wears out.

It's okay, Ive turned data roaming off, I'm using next doors Wi-fi so it's not costing me anything!!!!! Ps do you know any good trails near Puerto B**** or Istan. I've done about 70k but it's all been on dirt tracks around Istan??

Excuse my lack of tech knowledge but how exactly do these self lube bushings work? I have a bit of experience with bushings bearings etc with my work and to my knowledge you need oil or grease for lubrication. Can someone explain? Mick.
