You may ask why I bother but receipt of some vouchers over the festive period had me venturing up to carrickmines to meet one of their 'specialists'.
I spotted a pre-****scent chap fixing a saddle with an adjustable spanner and thought 'this guys will know his stuff!'.
Unfortunatly the request for a 'shock pump' was met with a bemused repsone that was bordering on the insulting. He felt quite justified in branding my request ludicrous rather than highlight his own ignorance. An ignorance that was further compounded with the offer of a C02 or presta mini pump that ' should do the job fine'.
Rather than be the bigger person and walk away I decided to fight fire with fire and, pleading ignorance, ask the chap to check his online system 'just to see if you sell anything of the sort'. The oddly confident specialist strode over to his internerd terminal and with exaggerated gestured ,used to highlight the pointlessness of such a task, gingerly typed in 'shock pump'. His face said it all as the system threw back the link below......
Idiot.
Halfords employees are a breed of their own, I think they have a strict 'hire only morons' policy. I went in once asking for a set of rear brake pads for my car and because the computer said so he told me my car didn't have a rear brakes, they really are a special bunch.
Went looking for a chainring bolt there one day and was told you can't get them and that Id have to get a new chainset......or.......the best bit........."you could get it pop-riveted on"
Since we are making fun of branded chain store, I have a funny story.
Once upon a time I went in McDonalds and tried to order a Big Mac Meal from the nice Chinese girl behind the till. She says some thing sounding like âdojumingwhapourâ, I donât speak Chinese, and I was a little drunk, so I though I would try again slowly, âA big mac meal pleaseâ. It didnât seam to work, back came âdo ju ming wha puorâ. I though a sure three times the charm and tried again, âI..... Would....... Like....... A....... Big..... Mac.....Meal....., Please......â. The girl just kind of looked at me and then pointed up at the menue. At that point I realise I was in Burgerking, and just took the bloody Whopper and left.

And no, it was quite clear he'd never come across the concept of a 10 speed.
But thats for a chain. You asked for a powerlink for a cassette
Easy to make mistakes, not everybody knows everything :). Alot of Halfords stores employ young lads with a interest in bikes, treating them like gob****es because it makes you feel better when you know what a shock pump is and they dont is a bit sad. They are only trying to learn.
Just as easy to open your eyes and go look for the shock pump, then have friendly chat and explain to the lad what it is. I Doubt some people would be so insulting to staff in Cycle Inn or the likes if they knew something the staff didnt. They certainly wouldnt belittle them.
That said some staff in Halfords aint interested or even own a bike and couldnt give a bollix.
Hone, go away. you are not an EPIC member, nor do we want you as one.
Halfords claim to be an upmarket bike shop, and in doing so, should employ competent staff. Selling incorrect parts is annoying, timewasteing and dangerous. Connect a co2 to your forks and you'll see what I mean.
I've a big stick for the New Year..until somebody comes along with a bigger stick then I'm not putting up with muppets on EPICmtb..
If I've never seen you on a bike you might as well not exist, good riddance
Richie The Bollix
I remember a certain EPIC member working in Halfords for a while, I went up there one day for a nose around, asked a few questions and got the best bit of honest customer service ever...
"stop, don't go any further, it's as simple as this, we have nothing good here, end of story"
I said thanks and went on my way.
I won't reveal who it was as I'd say it was a dark period in his life.
Connect a co2 to your forks and you'll see what I mean.
wait'll I get my bloody hands on you fecker!
how the fruck was I to know you were joking?
connected the CO2 canister ok and then a big bang and the bolloxin' fork lowers shot across the garden and impaled my poor cat up it's rear end
now all the kids are upset and the wife has beaten me something horrid
you should really tell people when you are not being serious about things
I remember hearing of a lad who bought a new pair of forks from Mick Jordan, and tied adding more pressure in a petrol station. did something similar....

Woops, have to admit it I have actually done this to a rear shock on a scott genius. I wasn't overly concerned as the shock needs silly pressure to pump up and I had inadvertently let all the air out while on the top of some silly hill and riding the bike airless would definitely have trashed the shock anyway.
I actually couldn't get enough air into the shock using the cannister.
Dont however try this at home folks maybe the cannister wasnt full when I started. Anyone know what pressure co2 cylinders are packed at?
