I would strongly suggust you visit a proper bike shop and see what they can do for you. There is Hollingsworth Cycles in Templeogue, The Cycle Inn in Tallaght and the Long Mile Road, The CycleSuperstore in Tallaght, Wheelworx in Clondalkin, and the Bike Rack in Cabinteely. Drop into a few of these, ask for advice from the people who work there, as they actually ride their bikes, and you will get good customer service if you have any issues.
Regarding your question on the bike. I think they are quite good for the money and would make a very good starter bike which you could keep and upgrade in time. Fine for spins. There is a mix of parts which you see on most of the other similar priced models from other big brands, only this may be a little cheaper and at least it has half decent forks (if its the model with recons?). A friend has one and he is very happy with it. I think he got a big reduction so no harm in asking. But he got it cheap from Halfords cause they caused him so much hastle.
But no matter, its new and made of reliable parts and probably a little better than some other similar priced bikes from trek and Giant so why not, if something breaks just go to a proper mechanic and have it fixed or learn to do it yourself. The Boardman are grand and the carrera are not as good, infact avoid the carerra. If you think your going to get into mtb, buy something half decent (like your Boardman or similar) instead of something crap which you will endup upgrading ($$$) or selling for nothing (!!!).

go with what Transporter says..those Boardman bikes are muck..i've only seen one in action and its a hopeless mountainbike..as for Carrera and Halfords..
Go to one of those listed bike shops and see what they have to offer.

The bike itself will be fine. The main problem will be if anything goes wrong with it that the level of customer service you will receive will be appalling. It might be slightly cheaper to start with but in the long run if there are any warranty issues or anything like that it may not be worth the hassle to bring it back so you will end up paying to get it done elsewhere. Shop around with the shops on the list you may be surprised what special offers etc and deals can be found if you ask.
