shoulder injury stuff

hey all,

after dislocating my collarbone last August my physio now wants to refer me to get an x-ray guided injection right into the AC joint ( between the bone & ligaments) to get the inflammation out cause it's still not right.

Am a bit apprehensive. Anyone ever heard of it? Or even had such treatment?
Any experiences or oppinions out there?

Any advice appreciated!!!

Cheers Nat
I managed to paralyze my shoulder for a few days a couple of years back. When the movement started to come back it came with a fair bit of pain and a huge loss in power. Went to see a guy about, got an mri etc, nothing major showed up. Decided to shell out the cash and get a cortisone injection into the AC. Ended up spending a lot of cash for no noticeable difference. The next stop was general anesthetic exploratory surgery which I decided was too much risk for something that while annoying wasn't debilitating.

It's been about a year since I decided against the surgery and while there's always some slight discomfort it's been getting slowly better and a bit of gym work to strengthen it up has helped regain the power.

Overall I think that I would have been better off without the injection, considering I wasn't in that much pain and that it had no effect. However I was talking to someone in the waiting room who had the same procedure and was instantly relieved, however he was back in 3 months later to get another injection as the first one had worn off.

I can't say one way or another what you should do, but just that my experience might help you be more informed.
I have a dodgy back and have experience of joint pain and I would most definitely consult an osteopath before getting any injections.

Theres a guy I go to in Stillorgan who is great, pm me if you want his details.

Osteopaths look at the whole muscular/skeletal system and I personally have found them to be very good at fixing my back problems anyway.

Always worth getting a second opinion.
Had fluid taken from hip joint for inflammation with xray guidance. Like a continuous xray instead of a snapshot. Quick, didn't hurt bad & had instant results; no bother since.
cheers guys...
and yeah osteopath is always good... I have one in Stillorgan too probably same dude can highly recommend him, he sorted my hip in 2 sessions after having consulted doctors for years

will see how much VHI pay of that xray injection thingy & might decide by the cost
A friend of mine has been going to a good physio in Terenure who really knows his stuff with shoulder injuries, he looks after a lot of rugby players.
I can get his number for you if you want.
separated shoulder

hey i separated my shoulder a year ago but got back on the bike after a couple months and have been fine since until i fell on again last weekend. now my collarbone is having a good look out of the top of my shoulder and i figure i should prob do something about it before its rightly screwed.

i was wondering if anybody else has separated their shoulder bad and has anybody any recommendations on a good shoulder injury physio( id be interested in the one mentioned above).

cheers.
Rory.
A simple procedure with no risk and usually a positive outcome. Dislocations/subluxations are acute trauma and are not caused by chronic imbalances/weaknesses, therefore an osteo etc.. would not be of any benefit.... if there's still inflammation in the joint its from the original injury and therefore cortisone is probably the most appropriate route.
nasty Rory... kinda what I did... my one doesn't fecking heal up though. That injection thing was sort of useless, wouldn't recommend it unless u are ina lot of pain or you have VHI and it's free then anyway.

I have good physio in Maynooth now who also treats lots of rugby & GAA players if you are closer to west

my tendons or ligaments or whatever still keep catching the bone when it moves & then tehy snatch back, sore & disgusting feeling, not funny when it happens on bike, did that ever happen to you?

as I said, the cortisone didn't do a whole lot to me. next thing suggested was surgery, some wire/srew procedure to pull the collarbone back down into teh correct position...wish I would have done it straight way when teh frenchie's suggested it, cos tehn I would be fine by now...
good luck rory anyway, let's know if you find a cure

Oh I see. I thought you were contemplating getting the procedure done. Yeh if the joint hasn't aligned properly then it will continue to give you grief and will get worse if you don't get it sorted.

got it done in feb, 5,5 hours of freaking waiting in hospital... was ready to crack up. I'd say the injection might be good if it's a fairly new injury, to get inflammation killed

did u do your collarbone as well OZ? Never knew.
btw: any trip to lesley & pat planned during summer?
No haven't thank god but have some exp in the area. 8 weeks off the bike sounds like torture regardless of the outcome.

Yeh Im earning now so a Les Arcs adventure is defo on the cards although Pat & Les dont know it yet!
yep im closer to the west alright. living down in roscommon at the moment so ya i would be interested in that guy.
my collarbone used to rub of my shoulder too and make cracking noises when i moved it.

main thing im worried about now is arthritis in the future and i reckon my collarbone could easily burst through the skin if a fell on it bad again, so im looking for a physio whos seen it all before and is going to tell me everytime will be alright.

from the googling ive been doin, surgery only has a 50% success rate and an increased rate of arthritis in the future so make sure to check all the pros and cons out before getting it done.
