I'm going crazy without being able to go mountainbiking at the moment, waiting for a bike part. I've been thinking about getting another bike for a while.
I have a Kona Kula hardtail and would like the second bike to handle more aggressive riding. I'm really tempted by a Giant Reign X0 (2008 ) which seems to be a good deal. (http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/product...id=m1b4s1p1731)
I suppose I'm looking for a bike that can do everything, downhill, freeride, singletrack and climb. Any opinions greatly appreciated before I buy some magic beans !!!
the reign X is a good "do it all bike.does climb well with maestro suspension (+ propedal ) but if you set it up for DH trails ( install shorter stem, wider bars, dh tires, dh tubes) it'll be quite heavy and short for AM i think.
if you wanna do some DH and FR go for reign X. i did and would happily do it again if i was to make a choice once again.
if you like trails but do DH pnly ocasionally go for the Reign without X
and reardng your deal, there was one 2nd hand in pretty good nick for sale for 1400 if i remember well (?)

also Iron Horse 6 point for around a grand was here somewhere. if i didn't have my reign x at the moment, it'd be very tempting to me to buy the iron horse.
I was looking at the Reign X that was for sale on the forum but it's sold. The Iron Horse 6 point looks good. I'm about 5'11" - 6', I was thinking a medium might be too small. I'm going to check out the frame sizes.
Have a look at a Morewood shova too. Fantastic do it all bike. There's a good few of them knocking around the club now although I think they are all mediums. Strong, light, low maintenance frame.
If you are out on a craic spin your welcome to throw your leg accross mine.
the reign x and 6 points and the like are a bit crap. They fall into a bit of a no mans land between trail bike and a dh bike. There generally too heavy to pedal uphill for any length of time unless your savage strong. Also not much use for dh racing as the geometry is compromised to make it pedal. They make sense if you live in the alps or somewhere similar where there is lift accessed riding, and there might be a bit of a pedal from the lift station to the good trails that give you a 30 min descent. Id look at a trance x, trek fuel, morewood shova (im biased on that one) etc. There far more versatile and much more useable.
I have a reign..I was looking for Trance but I picked up the Reign frame at a great price , so I said **** it!..
Its a heavy yoke...its definitely a bike for the Alps as Al says..
The Trance is your best bet, Darragh..its the best Value and does everything you need as a 2nd Bike..
Rusty has a lovely Trek, so has llandai..
theres no point in getting a 6" bike in my opnion unless you can pedal it up hill..Daves Trek weighs the same as some of my old XC Race bikes.

Yea I have a trek fuel ex9 and I have to say I absolutely love it. It has 120mm travel front and back and weighs 27lbs, lighter than my steel hardtail! I did have a 160mm lapierre spicy but I have to say I don't really miss the extra 40mm of travel on the descents but everywhere else the Trek is way nicer than lugging around a slack, big travel 30lbs+ bike. I'd definitley recommend a fuel to anyone as a do it all full suss.
Cheers for all the info, some really good advice there. It made me think more about the type of mtb'ing I do. I might regret buying the Reign X as the spins I go on at the moment all involve quite a bit of climbing.
I'm going to look at the Trance, Trek Fuel EX and Morewood Shova. The Morewood Shova looks really good but would probably be outside my budget.
I decided to go for a Trance X. The Morewood frames are really sweet and I would love to have gone for one but I went way past my budget with what I got. The Trance seemed to be the best value and from what I have heard will be good on the descents and well capable of climbing too.
I can't wait to get out on it. There was a problem delivering the replacement hanger that I ordered so I'm really itching to get out on the bike again!!!
