Could some one point me to a decent camera please. I know fcuk all about them. Will be used for taking pictures. Deadly ones / private ones / random ones, etc.
Donât mind spending a few quid it the deadlyness level goes up dramatically, but fancy **** would be wasted on me, I donât get lighting man.

what size one do you want,ie one that goes into your pocket,or hangs round your neck.?

The technology advances so quickly in the digital camera market that's it's hard to keep up and know what's best, unless you're a mega camera geek. From personal experience, Canon (G series) and Panasonic (LX series) were nice to use and produced good quality images.

Pros: This camera has a solid feel to it, is compact and has relatively easy to use features. Shock-proof / Water-proof features should make this camera perfect for outdoor sports, or (as in my case) snapping pictures around construction sites - but...
Cons: The picture quality under all conditions (bright sunlight, overcast, low-light conditions, indoor or outdoor) is so poor, this camera takes pictures that are useless for anything other than viewing on the LCD screen.
Summary: There is not much point in buying any camera that takes pictures of such low quality as the Pentax Optio W80. While I don't expect SLR quality from any WP/SP camera, this latest offering from Pentax does not come close to to my old WP 10 which I loved. I could go on about the other problems the W80 has with the automatic function, but there's not much point. If you have any plans to purchase this camera, take an SD card to your local store and snap a few pictures. Then take the card home and have a look at what you've got before you buy the camera."
Seems fine for work based stuff so far. I'm quite happy with the quality. We have only used them in bright light so far as the weather has been so good but so far so good.
I got one of these recently, as a compact it does most things well, HD movie, louds of preset options, self timer. Easy menu, quick start, good lense\zoom etc. Battery life could be better though. As a no hastle option its ideal and gets alot of good reviews. If out cycling it can take fast shots and multiple shots at speed. Its not an Ultra small but could still fit in your pocket or hand bag!
Suppose there is no comparison between this camera and the Digital SLR's used for Sports\cycling photography. But big difference in price.

I've had several and I finally decided on a little Nikon , i bought in Argos..it was €119..i never obsessed about anything else before like getting a camera and its a little beauty..
Its Red, it says Nikon Coolpix..
Great value and I couldn't find any other more expensive camera that would do what i want..
Plus..
a €100 camera is a lot more disposable than a €300 if you catch my drift..
And I find the menus so simple..and the quality of the pictures and video deadly..
and its a Nikon, how can it be anything but good !!
I was going to buy a Canon..but the price didn't justify it..and i've had 2 Sonys..jesus christ they wrecked my head !! but the video quality was excellent
Have to say that I'm very impressed with the new Canon 550d. Comes in a bundle with image stabilised zoom lens, is 18mp and records hi-def video. I currently use a 5 year old 300d (check out my pictures on www.uberdogmagazine.co.uk) and am desperately trying to afford one of these. It really is the dogs...
Primarily I would like to be able to take pictures with it. If it takes video, toasts bread, transforms into a killer robot, then yeah, deadly, but decent pictures first.
Wonât be taking it on spins, or going scuba diving with it or anything like that.
Will be used primarily for holiday snaps, the odd opportunistic âquick honey get the camera, there is a duck fighting with a squirrelâ. And taking pictures of lads on bikes going down hills. for my own amusement, no plans to be one of those lads who sell photos on the internerd.
I am also a closet technophobe, so standard enough technology would be better.
For example, I have some yoke I bought in aldi a few years ago. Its grand for taking snaps of the fridge and stuff, but doesnât seam to like moving things, like bikes and stuff. Also there seams to be a bit of a delay between me pushing the button and it taking pictures. Last time I used it at a race I got lots of back wheels. Also either me or it doesnât get the whole light thing, lots of pictures seem to be just all bright and glarey, but as I said that could be a problem with the operator. It also seems to have issues with small versus far away, but again that you be an operator issue. And finally I lost the book and CD that came with it so I have about a hundred random pictures trapped on it and I have no idea how to magic them out of the matrix.
I donât really mind where I hang the thing, but it would be good to have something I donât need a trailer to carry around. To my untrained eye there seams to be two types, the small ones you carry around and can stick in your pocket, and big ones that have these big lenses sticking out. I think the small variety would suit me better, but then all the people taking pictures of bikes seam to have big lenses sticking out. Perhaps they are just compensating for something? But I donât even know what the difference is?
