Right I'm sure this has been up here before but I can't find it, I'm looking to buy a new rain coat and I can't stand reading all the waffle on the internet about which is best so I'm looking for recommendations. The last one I had was an Altura one which wasn't bad but didn't last too long before it looked tatty and the waterproofing went to crap, so I'm thinking for trying a different brand. I'll mainly be using this for commuting and road/mtb and general wearing so obviously looking for something very breathable and water resistant, I'd be looking to spend around the €150 mark but if I can get something decent for cheaper then well and good. Anyone got any good personal experiences they would recommend (in coats) and I don't want to see the words Lidl or Aldi in a reply.

are you looking for a jacket or a shell? greatoutdoors have some Montane shells that pack up TINY for about 60-70 quid
if it's a jacket you want go to the northface outlet in kildare village!

I've had a Berghaus goretex paclite jacket for about 5 years now, still fairly waterproof, little bit of tearing beside the zip but that's it. I've used it on the road, mtb, commuting.
It doesn't pack up that small for the pocket of a road jersey but its grand in a camelbak.
The one above is a bit pricey, they used to have cheaper jackets, I paid about â¬130 for the one I have.

Don I have several Mexican hats and an inflatable BBQ over here in sunnysunnysunny Deansgrange..ooh the heat..I've thrown out all my bad weather clothes as the Heatwave is just around the corners..
Two places definiely worth visting if you're looking for outdoor waterproofs:
TK Maxx - if you have patience to look through stuff... I picked up a 3 layer gore shell jacket there for €90 which was 300GBP in the regular shop!
Patagonia outlet on Exchequer street - they have sale at the moment, a few of my mates are working in there (Bart for example but is away for couple of months), nice stuff and good value too.
Cheers Sean I tried cycling home nude but people seemed to have a problem with it for some reason and come the snowy season it has it's complications so I have to buy a coat now also the cycle to work thing is paying for it, well that's what I understand of the scheme, free stuff and hex nothing I know as soon as I buy a nice new rain coat the sun will be splitting the sky, so you're all very welcome for the August heat wave that's about to start.
if you have a few bob, the Gore Alp X jacket is good! but no matter what you do you'll get wet on the bike in the rain, from perspiration as much as from the rain. Simples.
or Anal Gayling..I think he sleeps in his rainjackets

The new Base Camp store in Middle Abbey St (beside back entrance to Arnotts) is very good on outdoor gear like that. Talk to a chap called Gearóid Towey and say Alan Ayling, or better still Eoin Keith, sent you.
All good advice there. Patagonia is a gem of a shop. Most Irish people don't realise just how good Patagonia stuff is, and we get it dirt cheap in their only outlet shop in Europe. Basecamp is run and staffed by real outdoor enthusiasts and experts, and they have a very impressive and growing range of brands stoked there. Practically a "what's what" of the best adventure racing gear you can buy. And don't worry about stuff being bike specific or whatever. A good jacket is a good jacket full stop.
