Bike Fit

I had a bike fitting done one time at another place, it worked out well for the road bike. It was supposed to give MTB recommendations as well but the dimensions it came up with were ridiculous, something like 42 cm bars.
Unless the system was specifically designed for mountain biking, I wouldn't bother.
If I understand correctly bike fit is geared at finding the best dimensions for a bike to fit you, as such it is okay before you go and buy a bike but of limited use after you buy the bike.

Another approach is to get measured up on your existing bike and find out the optimum setup. I went to
http://irishfit.ie/

in Dun Laoghaire for a fitting on my road bike last year.

The first step is to check your flexibility and muscle usage. Then they use a turbo and video cameras linked up to a computer to measure your angles as you cycle, this highlights if you are cycling efficiently or if you have technique issues like knees moving laterally that can cause future injury.

The bike is adjusted to get as close to the theoretical best angles for your body type (ankle, knee, waist, shoulder, elbow) and goals (power, endurance etc.) and recommendations made for further adjustment if needed (crank length, stem etc).

You get a full report and a recommended set of stretches and exercises to target and issues highlighted during the session.

I did it last year, cost about €70 and took an hour, the differences were very noticeable on the road bike and gave a good idea of what proper position and setup felt like that was useful on the MTB and highlighted some muscle usage issues that were causing a series of injuries, so for me it was useful, if you are serious about your racing or just know that there is something not right about your setup it is probably worth doing, if only to find out that you just need to HTFU!
on the other hand you could do a coaching session with me for 2 hours , pay a lot less than that, I can assess your position on your bike, no machine or individual connected to a machine can tell you how to improve your riding by either forcing you to suit the bike or forcing the bike to suit you ..have no wires and videos, have the craic, pick up a few scars to impress the ladies , be told what you should be doing, i can give you stretches to do and I can make you deadlier than when you set out ! I can guarentee that you will get more out of your Mountainbike riding than any Clipboard wielding Scientist !!

Of that I have no doubt Richie! For me anyways it can be a real pain hopping from Mountain to road bike, and im usually re-adjusting the seatpost and saddle position every time i go out... And i do suffer from a bit of back and joint pain... could be just me getting used to being back out on the bike properly again and things taking time...i'm not 18 anymore ;D

haha! Well my brain still thinks its 18 but the oul bones are disagreeing with it, just a matter of the two catching up with each other..

Though if you have any XC coaching sessions coming up then let me know...
