Night spin light advice

Hi,

Anyone got any recommendations for some descent lights for night spins? Evenings are closing in fast so it’s gona be night spins soon enough.

I’ve been consulting the aul interweb but don’t really know what to get-do I get handle bar mounted or head mounted or both? I suppose 3-4 hour burn time would be advisable. I did see one light with 4 hour burn time and a 900 lumen output which is more than most lights I’ve seen but it’s expensive.

A lot of people swear by them, a lot of people hate them. I used mine for all of last years winter and didn't have any problems but it's a good idea to wrap the battery pack in a waterproof bag or something similar. Be aware that most people are getting stung by customs with packages from dx so they're probably going to end up costing a bit extra.

I'm sure someone else will have recommendations for brand name lights if you'd rather spend a bit more cash.

Your going to be given all kinds of advice on this topic so I'm going to stay out of it... but what I will say is get a helmet mounted light... the advantage is that you see where you are going rather than where the bike is pointing..

These lights are great, very reliable and plenty of light, there down to €270 on CRC at the moment, can't seem to get onto their site but here they are on cyclesuperstore:

Lee - like Basil said.. buy the Dinotte ones.. no question.. forget about the rest.. trust me.. I'm a self proclaimed expert.. there will always be some clown who has to go and buy the most expensive stuff and then try justify it with meaningless pointless drivel about burn time and power.. You don't need 5 hour burn times.. you don't need the friggin' power of a small lighthouse.. in fact a feicin' torch taped to your helmet will do if you have to.. You don't need any of that marketing sales pitch bullsh!t that some people wallow in..

You are a beginner / novice MTB'er.. you've been at this less than year.. so you don't need to spend stupid money on something you'll only use 3-4 months of the year max...

Forget about burn time and power.. don't worry about these things.. thats for the magazine reading / dvd watching eejits to argue over.. what you need from night-lights is reliability.. as in bulbs and batteries.. The Dinotte system has all this covered...

How many times have you heard the old excuse 'oh I couldn't make the spin because I forgot to charge my batteries'..? Well with the Dinotte system you can just pop into a shop and buy a set on your way to the spin.. never worry about expensive specific batteries or chargers again.. a standard set of AA will last 2-3 hours.. long enough for any night-spin we do.. If your smart about it you can buy high power rechargeables and a good charger to save on buying batteries all the time..

I use the Dinotte lights myself and couldn't recommend them enough.. cheap price.. cheap & easy to replace batteries.. reliable & light weight.

The entire setup (light and batteries) is light enough to attach to your helmet.. no more fiddling with wires, battery packs, backpacks etc..

the light topic is usually more touchy than the tyre one.
everyone has their opinions.
Barrow some lights first if you can, as mac says, helmet mounted, but then do you go tethered or not (here we go again.....)

Fiona..there are 2 people who ride their bikes more than anybody else on this forum and have been doing it for a long time..we also ride every single Tuesday and thursday night all year round, hail, rain, snow, hurricanes..
and thats me and Alfie, sometimes i do 4 nightrides a week in the winter..
The Hope vision 2 LEDs are what we're on , they cost €180 in Hollingsworth to EPIC members..
Believe me you can pay whatever you want..you certainly don't need 900 lumens..
and you will only need a helmet mounted light..
I've used so many lights at this stage..but those Hopes, for reliability and function beat all the others..
You really want something reliable..
And don't be in a rush to go night riding..unless the weather is amazing, it sucks !!
Don't waste your time with anything else and do not buy anything without LEDS..
