Hi All, I am just back from my 5th New year family stay at the Aherlow House Hotel, which is about 10km South of Tipp town.
We rent one of the houses (there are about 20) adjacent to the hotel.
There are several forest and road trails you can hit right out of the house. Mostly short - 6 to 12km - but there are 30km+ trips into the two Corry lakes deep in the Galtees. There's some serious climbing involved; if you plan well you can climb on the roads and DH on the trails.
There's a website www.aherlow.com which is supported by the hotel owner, Fergal. He, and Fas who sponsor marketing & development of the routes, are pro-MTB. I had a good chat with them this year.
The trails are usually quiet, though with a good few walkers on holiday days over New Year. I come across the occasional MTBer, horse rider and motorbike trail rider.
This year, with the kids etc I went out mostly at night. Had an encounter with an owl one night, it hovered over me for a good look.
It's a good place if you're an MTB'er with a family to keep on side!
I got the set of cards with all the trails, which are not on the website. Let me know if you want them & I could scan them.
