hi was knocked down while out on my mtb thursday broke collar bone and arm.
My arm has 4 inch plate in lower part now just wondering if anyboby has similar plate and how does it affect their mtb ing as im worried
Every injury is different, but I have ran a marathon with a rod down the middle of my shin bone (fib or tib - the big one) and a plate and screws in my ankle - not a bother. There are loads more extreme examples, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Maier.
Anyway, the body is amazing at healing, just do what the doc and physio say. Everybody worries, just stay positive.
Sorry to hear that Ken. I broke my ankle (fibula) in two places , 2 weeks ago after a slow motion MTB fall, just had a follow up xray today and they are not adding a plate ( I am happy for that). A lot of pain, but the biggest problem is not being able to get around without crutches. So count yourself lucky that you are/will be mobile.
Plenty of people have plates and they actually help speed up the recovery. So no long term worries.
Everybody is advising me not to rush the process, to be patient and let it heal properly. The worst thing would be to double you time off by re-injuring it and perhaps causing long term damage.
howya ken i was shocked when i got your text today about what happend, id say dont worry about mtb at the minute just let the arm heal and in time when all is healed you will be flying around townely again ,all the best
I broke my arm and have plates pins etc in it whn I was 15. had a nice stretch of 13 years before I needed a plate in my ankle again! and only 3 broken bones in between the two surgeries. it doesnt matter how slow or fast u are sometimes u just go down!
good luck with the recovery, physio and doing ur exercises. they are soooo important.
I have one in my radius for the last 15years. Physio was harder due to having to stretch the ligaments over the plate, but all is good. no side effects. I have 3 in my hand though, and one gives me some problems. Mainly freezing up on cold road spins.
Sorry to hear about the injury, that sucks more than a Bangkok prostitute after doing her doing shift at the ping pong emporium. I broke my right leg, fibula and tibia doing the XC nationals last year. I had to have 2 operations to sort it out, I've got 15 screws and two plates in my leg. The first month following the surgery I was in serious agony, if I wasn't lying down with my leg elevated I was in tremendous pain. My advice is do exactly what the doctors tell you to do, if they say stay off the bike for 2 months, then do it. Go to all your physio sessions and do all the exercises.
Try not to get disheartened. I scowered the internet looking to see how long it would take to heal. The answer is ever one and ever injury is different. One of the lads in Zero Gravity broke his collar bone in October, and its still not healed properly, basically because heâs a smoker. Smoking is a serious no no when it comes to broken bones. Donât be thinking how long it will be before your back cycling. Concentrate on the healing process. Iâm doing more on the bike now than I was before I broke my leg. Chin up, it could be worse, you could be getting married in seven weeks!
Hi, I'm new around here and to MTBs in general. But I use to do a lot of motocross, and all the injuries are the worst part about mx (so seeing a thread here about broken bones isn't a great start ha, thats what I want to get away from!).
But anyways going back to the 1st post, I broke my upper arm a few years back, and have a titanium pin still in there, it was an annoying few months out when I broke it but now I don't even know its there apart from a few scars. Plates are can be slightly more tricky if they are sticking out at all (they can rub against tendons), so often are taken out. In terms of getting over it, the one big thing that will make a massive difference is go find a good sports physio, not a normal physio! Sports physios take a more active approach and have you doing exercises sooner.
